it occurred to me to wonder whether making a graduated speed limit on multilane highways would make traffic flow better or worse. I.E. if you have a two lane freeway, the fast lane has a higher official pace than the slow lane. but would this improve traffic flow, by encouraging "law abiders" to pass at a better pace, or would it boggle things up with more people wanting to be in the "fast lane?"
my knowledge of human nature inclines me to say it would make things worse, but maybe I'm being overly pessimistic.

I agree. In Illinois we have one speed limit for all lanes and many signs that read, "slower traffic keep right." They may as well save their money and eliminate those signs, no one pays any attention. Nobody wants to admit that they are the slower people. Maybe the signs should read, "Dumber people keep left", that way everyone will stay in the right lane and us dumb people can use the left lane to pass.

Considering how often the signs locally that say that semi trucks are prohibited in the left lane are completely ignored by truckers, I think most people will either ignore it, or use it as an excuse to act like bigger idiots than they already are.

yeah, human nature being what it is, it is likely to add more problems than it alleviates. - the base thought was we wouldn't have people driving side by side within 1/2 of a mile per hour of each other.

I hate when people do that. You can be the only two cars within a half mile and they pull up next to you, usually in your blind spot, and then sit there and pace you.

I'm usually the third car waiting for them to get done passing so I can get back up to highway speed. of course, my biggest beef is the ones who then pass on the right and force their way in front of you while you wait patiently in line. I've been known to maintain the resultant spacing; but what I'd really like to do to those jerks is PIT them. since we don't have the UK's law against noseflying trucks.

Right, I’ve been in that situation too. See, there actually are some things we agree on.

Can anyone explain the guy who goes around me just to slow down and exit off, when if he'd have just tucked in behind me at (yes, about the speed limit -- 2 to 3 Kilometers per hour over) would have only meant an extra second or so???!!!!!!! AH!!!! Was my going almost as "slow" as the speed limit really THAT bad?!!!?!?!?!?

Why is it that anyone that drives faster than me is a maniac and anybody that drives slower is an idiot?

Why is it that anyone that drives faster than me is a maniac and anybody that drives slower is an idiot? at least some of them have the decency to dress the way they drive.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I am at the tale of a line of traffic that is moving down the highway. I am a reasonable distance behind teh car in front of me, then someone goes to merge in, forcing their way in front of me, sometimes making brake hard to avoid an accident. Meanwhile, there is literally no one behind me for half a mile or more. So you can go in front of mea and risk an accident, or wait 2 seconds for me to pass and have the road clear?
Here's your sign...

Here's your sign... related, if I am at the tail of a line, the car ahead of me proceeds to stop to let every person waiting at a stop sign in ahead.
