GTCGreg, maybe you can answer this:
The film is mainly set at a family's house in the Chicago suburbs. In the start of the film they are driving through the local mountains to find a Christmas tree. How far is it from Chicago to mountains? IS this day trip depicted reasonable, or is it another underhanded gag to infer that they will drive many hours to find the right tree?

We do have some pretty good hills here and there, but nothing that you could even remotely call a mountain. The highest point in Illinois is Charles Mound located in the Northwest corner of the state. It's about 140 miles from Chicago and Wikipedia describes it as a "gentle high hill." And that 1235 foot height is in reference to sea level. Keep in mind that Chicago is already 520 feet above sea level.
