Tesla invented the Wardenclyffe tower in the early 1900's as a way to power large areas. It never took off in our world due to the extreme inefficiencies of the system.
However, what if it did? What would the world of the 21st century be like if that technology wasn't considered a dead end and in fact grew to become the standard power system for the world.
So what are things that would change and how do you think people would overcome the limitations?
At a minimum, radio as we know it though the 20th century would never have existed. the amount of RF interference generated by mass scale wydenclyffe towers would drown out anything on any radio frequency. From there a whole slew of technology changes. What would the world be like without radio and everything that has grown from that.
WWII would have been completely different. No RADAR or radio communications. So the air war around the globe would have been completely different. England would not have had their radar system. German would not have had their bomb direction systems. No radio message to intercept would have completely changed things for all sides (no Project Magic, or Enigma machines.)
The space industry would be completely different you could not have the real time communication and weather systems. Maybe Laser based system to communicate? Deep space exploration would be significantly harder.
Growth of rural areas would actually be far easier because you don't have to run power to all houses, something that took many decades* in real life.
* There were parts of West Virginia without electricity service as late as the 50's.
