voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/news/details.php?article_id=108As a test, NASA fired Voyager 1's backup thrusters for the first time in 37 years. This system has been dormant for 37 years because it requires a heater to function which uses the craft's limited power. The primary thrusters are degrading over time, so NASA decided to try the backup system. This showed that when the primary thrusters die in a year or two, they have an option to continue the mission. The test was so successful that they are now looking at doing the same on Voyager 2.

I didn’t know they were still maneuvering the voyagers. I thought they were just coasting along. But then, I guess they have to do something to keep the antenna pointed towards earth.

It would be a lot easier if Earth would just stay still. But since it keeps moving around a giant ball of flaming gas, you have to regularly tweak the line of sight of Voyager. The frustrating part is that being 17.5 light hours from Earth, When you send out a command signal, it takes a day and a half before you know if it worked or not.

And in other Voyager news. NASA is receiving some confusing data from Voyager. The data suggests the Voyager is not orientated correctly yet the on-board computer says that it is. The on-board computer must be correct because if it wasn't positioned correctly, we wouldn't be receiving any data at all. NASA is trying to figure it out.

Update on Voyager 1 Last May, Voyager started transmitting confusing data saying it was sick even though other data indicated all was well. NASA just figured out what was wrong and was able to resolve the problem with a simple fix. What happened was somehow (reason still unknown), Voyager had switch it's positioning system to another computer that was known bad and had been shut down years ago. When NASA sent a command to Voyager to switch back to the known good computer, the problem went away. NASA is still trying to figure out what caused it to switch to the bad computer, but for now, Voyager is A-OK. Long live Voyager!
