All experiments posted in this section should be done with adult supervision in a controlled environment and with reasonable safety precautions.
In this case, that comes down to not drinking the liquid, keeping things refrigerated, and having mom or dad wield the pointy instrument.
On the egg theme, here is one about diffusion:
Materials:
3 eggs.
food coloring
3 containers.
Vinegar
Corn starch
Water.
Something sharp.
Get three eggs, and three containers with lids to put them in, about twice the size of each egg. Fill each container with enough vinegar to get the egg to the point that it is floating or fully covered. Wait a few days.
*note: while waiting, I would recommend keeping the eggs in the fridge if you don't want a putrid odor.
Questions:
Look at the egg. Has it changed? Has it grown? Shrunk?
*Note: at this point, the egg, though not too fragile, still can break. If you remove it, be prepared for a mess and use caution.
At this point, the egg has had the shell dissolved off, and the fun begins. Remove two eggs carefully from their containers and place them somewhere. Refill one container with water and another with corn starch. Put the eggs back in place. What do you think will happen? Write it down. Wait a few days and come back.
Questions:
What do the eggs look like now? Are they different? Why do you think its behaving like this?
Last experiment. Up until now you have only seen water move around. What about something else? Add food coloring to all three egg containers, and wait a few days. Now, you finally get to do what you have been wanting to do since step 1: pop the egg. wash off each egg, place it in water, and predict what you think it will look like inside. Pop each egg, observing what it is like inside. Did it match what you thought it would?
Questions:
What happened? Why did you think would happen? Why do you think it happened?
