There is a old wives-tale that if you draw a chalk line around your house you will never have ants in it. But you don't have to draw a chalk line around a house to prove this old myth. Simply draw a circle around some ants and watch. You will notice they won't cross the chalk line until they realize they are trapped within the circle and they eventually cross it.
Draw a chalk circle around a piece of food and watch that the ants will not go after the food. They stop at the chalk line. The food remains out of their reach. All the ants have to do is cross the chalk line but they don't.
So maybe the old wives-tale is true???

Ants just don't like the chalk on their feet so they try to avoid it.
The ants can walk over the line just fine if they have a good reason to do it.
Just smear a very wide line of poop onto the floor around a table. Nobody will want to get to the table any more. Then put money onto the table and people DO walk over the poop to get the money. Same for the ants, if really hungry, they just cross the line.
