If you've ever been up close to it, you'll know it definitely wasn't built that way!

I vote for the theory that it was so shocked at the marriage of a virgin that it bent down to look, and got twisted when it rose back up. That'll work as well as any other till it is rigorously analyzed by a structural engineer.

The Mystery is no more.... but still causes discussion.... It has been tested.... a few times.... The maker used "Green" wood in part of the construction that hadn't been seasoned properly before it was used.... The spire was a "Retrofit" to the top of an existing Stone tower. The Craftsmen used were, well, as far as I can find out, it has been suggested it was done "On the cheap" anyway, so perhaps not the best?... it was commissioned by someone who did it to a VERY tight budget who cut corners to keep costs down........ The design changed during construction has been a suggestion as well. It of course twisted. Replacing it was cost prohibitive. There was no Guarantee, they could not go back and "sue" the craftsmen.
Later additions of different materials were to stop it leaking, but they didnt help.
The Above is all from "Local" peoples history (And Possible myth-and-legend) of people who live in the area, its not that far from here, I visit the area quite frequently.
I add them as possible things to research if anyone wants to take it any further?...
Either way, it became a landmark, and later generations quite liked the fact it was "Iconic" because it was different.
By the way, I will suggest that the author of that Wiki page is a little loose on his historical research... ? Wiki is a good place to start, but not always the definitive answer.

There is a house in my town that was built to similar standards. it is called "the mushroom house" because it came out bigger at the top than at the bottom. nothing supernatural about it - just poor workmanship.
