Preamble (can't hold back the rant any longer)
– CSI: New York is the last of that franchise that I watch. The original just didn’t make it anymore after William Peterson and Jorja Fox left. Miami was silly from day one, but my tolerance for absurdity is way too high, so the camel’s back wasn’t broken till the episode of the gun with hundreds of barrels that turned the victim into just so much pink mist. Now New York has had several idiotic premises, and the camel is really bellowing in pain.
I’m speaking of the 3D printed gun from last week.
1.No, I’m not saying that it’s impossible to make a gun with a 3D printer. I’ve seen printed objects with many more separate parts than any hand gun. 3D printing can be done with metal, so I have no doubt it’s possible to print a gun (though it would probably be better to print the parts individually).
2.My main objection is to the script saying that this is some little known, nearly secret technology that should not be widely advertised.
3.Now the question for the Mythbusters is: Can a firearm made in this manner work once, as it did in the program? And if so what’s the maximum caliber that would work? For those who didn’t see the program, the revolver was fired twice, the first time normally. The second time it disintegrated, giving the gunman numerous minor shrapnel wounds. The problem is some 3D printers can deposit metal, but they can't do metallurgy (yet).
The problem for the MB’s is that they would not be allowed to build the test pieces themselves. The guns would have to be made by a licensed manufacturer under BATF supervision. The testing and disposal of the guns would have to be under the same supervision.
Final thought: There’s no reason other than a plot requirement, that the CSI: New York gun had a smooth bore.
