It's to the point now that I'm half-tempted to see Java itself as a security breach.
I'd disable it completely, but one of the coupon sites my mom goes to (Smartsource) runs off of it.

In Firefox, top Bar, tools, Add-Ons or [cltrl]+[shift]+ , look for Extensions, Java is in there, and by rights, Java should have been disabled already sice version 6 by Firefox as a known unstable product, also look in Plugins, for Java Quick Starter, which is also disabled for the same "Is Known to cause Stability or Security issues" here....
Have had them disabled for over 12 months here (From Java version 6, possible Firefox 12?...) and am now on Firefox version 17.0.1, with an update waiting for version 18... possible reason for Firefox Update is this Java issue... I have heard issues with Java are being sorted out, but this new Firefox was only notified to me Yesterday....
One last note, in the General Board [new] Icon malfunction thread, citadelofmyths.freeforums.net/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=368..it was suggested we had a separate board within he citadel for these kind of technical help issues.... is this not another GOOD reason to have a tech-help board?....

This security warning addresses the most recent concern about Java whilst this notification tells a little about how seriously browser producers are taking it. The first link gives further links to instructions on how to disable Java.

Thank you anonym and freegan for that info. Java has now been completely disabled on my computer.
This leaves me with a little problem though. My web banking program runs in JRE and the physical location of my bank is more than an hour away from where I live. Guess I'll have to contact the bank and ask if they have any intention of changing their platform, now that this info is out there.
And yes Silver, I completely agree. This is a perfect example of something that could be helpful to have in a tech-help section.

It's to the point now that I'm half-tempted to see Java itself as a security breach. Like as you are half tempted to see a 30ft wide hole in a prison wall as a security breach?

This security advisory from Sophos announces that Oracle has released a patch for the latest vulnerability in Java. Those of you dependent on Java (eg. for online courses) are advised to patch now. I'm choosing to leave Java uninstalled.

I am choosing to leave it un-updated and disabled.
That way, if it is needed to run, I will get a warning, and have the ability to get the next gen patched when I need it... but as I havnt needed it for so long, will I ever need it?.... I may just uninstall it.

My entire company has gone round disabiling all the Java on everyones computer, the problem is that we require it to run our inventory software, they've been putting java 6 on the machines, which apparently isn't affected.

Annoy them and tell them that Firefox has issued a warning that Java may contain security flaws SINCE Java version 6.....

The whole idea of Java is that "they" can run any code on your computer without asking.
There is no way that Java could be really trusted when used by your Browser or other online programs.
The published security flaws are just the tip of the iceberg. Of course things get real nasty when flaws are published since all the script-kiddies crawl out of the woodwork and try to make use out of it. But the real problem are crackers which find a security flaw to exploit it to their own advantage because those won't tell anybody about the security flaw, they just exploit it!

I've been searching the web a little and I can't find any reliable updates on this, so can anyone tell me if there's still trouble with Java, or if it's been fixed?
I use it pretty much every day right now and it's getting annoying to have to temporarily allow it in my browser every time. I'd like to know if it's safe to permanently allow yet?
