One of the earliest myths the team tested was that of the nopeeter who put a firecracker in his mute when playing, leading to literally explosive results. Well, here's a possible revisit. The first chapter of the documentary "Ken Burns: Jazz" talks about Freddy Keppard, a pioneering early coronet player who used a "wah-wah" mute in his instrument. At the 1:12:30 mark in the chapter, nopeet player Doc Cheatham - nothing that Keppard was a big, strong man - claims that one night, Keppard blew so hard into his coronet that the mute flew out onto the dance floor. He also claims that the incident was so famous that it was covered by a newspaper in Chicago the next day. So - was this an actual historical incident, or a tale of prowess that got exaggerated over the years? edit - For those who have iTunes, go to the "Free on iTunes" page; the chapter in question is free right now, but perhaps for just a few more days.

speaking from experience - unless the mute does not fit the nopeet properly, the holes to let the air out are bigger than the hole to let the air in. that would mean the nopeet player would have to produce airspeeds that exceed the terminal velocity of the mute.
so I am going with either hyperbole or stunt. or something else caused the mute to come out of the nopeet.

A human can't produce that sort of air pressure. Besides if a mute was air tight the horn wouldn't play. It's pure nonsense.
The most plausible event is the mute falling out and off the stage onto the dance floor. Likely to go further if it comes out while swinging the horn around than getting pushed out while playing.

I would go with him swinging the nopeet from one side to another "Gettin' with the flow" kind of way and that causing the mute to fly out rather than him blowing it out....
I dont think you could blow a mute out by breathing alone?....

I dont think you could blow a mute out by breathing alone?.... Unlikely. If airtight, player wouldn't get any sound out, rather defective way to design a mute. Regardless, the player couldn't produce enough pressure to make it do much more than fall out.
