We’ve all heard it, and most people take it (to some degree or another) as fact. But is there really truth in wine? To what degree does alcohol affect your ability to tell a lie?
For testing, I’m thinking KGT (well, GT, since they usually get the booze myths) come up with a series of outrageous yet still believable (if told convincingly) lies. Bring in a group of people, have KGT tell them the lies mixed in with some facts, and ask the group to determine which is which.
Then bring their BAC up to .08 (what is considered “drunk” in most of the US) and repeat.
They’d need a fairly large group to tell the lies to. I’d guess at least 10 or 20. They couldn’t use the same group both times, obviously, and with a small group you run the possibility of drawing a bunch that are all good at reading lies.
The biggest problem I see is maintaining that .08 throughout the test. They’d need to have their BAC checked constantly, and periodically have another drink.

Thing is, the team would have to be able to determine what's the truth and what was simply the person making stuff up due to their blitzed mental state.
IIRC, the latter is a large part of the reason why sodium pentethol (sp?) is no longer widely used as a "truth serum" and why it is advised that a person should ignore things said by someone who is talking in their sleep or talking while under sedation.

Well yes. Of course. That's part of the myth. "In vino veritas" is not just about the ability to lie convincingly, but whether you are acutally getting "truth in wine".
But better yet, spin the testing around. Instead of having them tell lies, come up with a series of questions to which the entire team knows the answers. Some will be answered honestly, some with lies.
Kari would act as interregator in front of a panel of "jurors" (the 20 random people). She questions Grant & Tori, first sober then drunk (again, in front of a different panel). The "jurors" have to determine which are the lies and which are the truths.

my ex certainly had no difficulty in not being honest when she had been drinking - however, alcohol does reduce inhibitions, which means the polite social niceties tend to go away and the sloshed person does tend to be more forthcoming with things that are only of minor importance.
a modern english way of putting it is "alcohol causes oversharing"

They'd probably want to steer clear of questions where the jurors might already know the answer, which knocks school-quiz and trivia-type questions out of the running.
What might work would be to design something on a computer (there's no need for a physical build) -- maybe a house, worked up in one of those 3D architecture programs you can get for cheap at the office supply store. The jurors never see any of the pictures until they watch the episode with the rest of us; they have to decide which team member is lying in his/her* responses to questions about what the house's rooms look like based on how that team member is acting. For extra fun, arrange ahead of time for everyone to give different lies on a designated question, and see if the jurors catch it.
--- *Kari's done booze myths before. As long as she's not trying for another kid, there's no reason to block her from participating in this one. Maybe bring Jamie or Adam over as the "moderator"?

again, in my experience, (and not just with my ex GF, remember I also am a fire/rescue volunteer and come into contact with drunk drivers, and teenagers who overconsumed)alcohol does not inhibit lying, it just encourages oversharing.

It also depends on the lie being told. If it is a lie told many times while drunk and/or sober, the rough edges have been smoothed out, the "facts" of the lie are consistent and sound more plausible. While a lie made up on the spot, even when mixed with truth, will not be as nearly convincing from a drunk, as it has yet to be polished and refined.
Then of course, lies are most effective against total strangers and/or those who have zero knowledge of the events being lied about and of course are even more effective against those who are more drunk than the liar is (or appears to be).
A drunk with a well prepared lie can tell it to the smallest detail, no matter how drunk.

Which is often how you catch a liar.
Lies are more often memorized and repeated in the exact same way several times, whereas people tend to recount true stories in a more relaxed way.
Facts remain the same, but some may be omitted or added depending on the situation in which the story is told. Different parts of the story may be emphazised depending on why you're telling the story at the given moment and most people also rephrase things more readily when being truthful.
Another part that people often overlook when lying is how their brains normally work. If you're the type of person who can't remember what you had for breakfast or what you did last friday night and with whom, it seems far fetched that you'd be able to recount in detail what happened on a specific date, at a specific time and who did or said what in which order. Especially if you're making up a trivial story to cover up the fact that you've been part of something that's anything but trivial.

I have tended Bar for so many years, I tend to forget how serious some of this is...... As a Bar tender, you get to hear more about peoples lives than you would think plausible. People "Unload" on the bar tender...... I hear all the problems, all the stories, good bad and indifferent, and as far as I would call it, if the law want to know the truth about ANYONE, go get hold of the bar tender at their local, and ask a few questions.... But then again, a GOOD bar tender, allows it to go in one ear and stay put.... Unless its the Law asking, as a bar tender, I wouldnt tell anyone anything you told me, because that is "Patient confidentiality" and all that?... Plus we may only be half-listening anyway.... How else do we talk to one person whilst serving half a dozen other people at the same time?....
So does Wine/beer/alcohol get you the truth?...
It relaxes the mind, confirmed. It relaxes inhibitions, confirmed.
For me, it makes the participant more willing to "share" secrets, or bits that perhaps sober people would otherwise be more careful about who they tell?....
As stated above (TLW) "Oversharing"... And as FM said, Lies get to the smallest detail, as the liar tries to cover their own story... things like the car that went over the bridge that was out wasnt just Red, it was a Ford [something] XLI {three I;s} with wide wheels that were Aluminium and I can tell you where you can buy them, and the red paint was that colour changing carp that costs eight thousand a litre....
In Vino Veritas, if you hang about drunk people, you get to hear a LOT of truths.... Drunk people will without a doubt be more willing to tell you exactly what they think of you if provoked, and not pull the punches. And as for that "neighbour" that has the young kid.... they can tell you everything that went on from the moment they moved in to which days they hang out washing and what colour t-shirts they were....
Lies?... people make up stories, "I once heard this from a good mate", and they aint goina tell you who that was, so go figure?.... But its a good tale anyway, and if it makes you laugh....
I hear more good comedy down at the bar than I could ever wish the Comedy channel to show....
This about someone previously noted for his "vampire" never seen out by anyone in daylight activities..... "Bills in Early..." "He;s having his coffin re-upholstered" "But this time of day?..." "He's using factor 5,000 sun-block"
All this is said within earshot of "bill", who just smiled.... To reveal a set of comedy vampire fangs.....
And that was just the start of it. After half an hour of that kind of mutual pizza taking, I had to go to the cellar to check on the Gas... This is an excuse... I needed to rest a while, I was laughing so hard my hand was shaking whilst poring the pints?...
