Not too sure really where to put this one, but since I would think that it would be hard to test I decided to stick it here.
Years ago, while watching a Batman (the WB animated version) episode, Bruce Wayne was captured (I think by the Scarecrow) and was in a realistic dream. In this dream it seemed to him, real. His parents where alive, and everything was different. However, whenever he went to read, it was a jumbled mess. Because of this he was able to realize that he was in a dream, and was able to wake up. Okay, so it was just a cartoon, but even fiction sometimes has an element of fact.
He is the question, can you read while in a dream? I really do not recall most of my dreams. Sometimes I can read, other times, well it is a jumbled mess. Then again at least now I do dream, being on the CPAP....

For myself I can not recall ever reading in a dream. Don't remember any friends mentioning it either, interesting question if turns out it's accurate

My recollection of reading while dreaming isn't so much that it's a jumbled mess as it's inconsistent. That is, if you read something and later in the dream look at it again the words are different (or at least appear to be different). I suspect that's because it's a dream, your short term memory isn't storing what you read so your imagination is having to reinvent the text.
I have a similar thing happen when I try to follow a map in a dream. Unless it's a very familiar read-world map (like my local subway map), I find that places rearrange themselves as the dream progresses.

I don't remember dreams often, but I know I've read in my dreams, and what I was reading made sense while I was in the dream. (After waking up is another question .) But, I learned to read at an early age. I literally cannot remember not being able to read. Give me a book in a dream, and I'm going to expect to be able to read it. Maybe for someone who learned to read in kindergarten, and remembers the learning process, it would be different.

Come to think of it, that is a more apt description, still it is interesting. Then again, my dreams are often inconstant as well. One moment I would be driving somewhere, than all, of sudden I am walking, with no knowledge where my car is, or why I am walking. I guess the brain does strange things when we are asleep.

The only times I can recall reading in a dream are when I fall asleep reading. And then, my "reading" experience has been pretty consistant with what others have said: it makes sense while I'm in the dream, but it's inconsistant with what is actually on the page.
In fact, it's not uncommon for me to be reading in bed, doze off for a few minutes and go on reading in the dream, then wake up and try to continue the book. It can be a bit confusing for a few seconds as I try to locate the place on the page that I was just reading, until I realize why I cannot find it.
Looking at it another way, I suppose that I'm rewriting the book in my dream as I read. Even a book I've read a few times before.

Probably, but as with most of my dreams I forget the details within just a few minutes.

Not reading as in a book, but I do remember a dream where I was reading the names and positions of people off of office doors. And I did remember after the dream that the names and positions were all wrong. (They were names from the offices I worked in.)

I remember reading in my dreams a number of times. Sometimes billboards, sometimes instructions. What I read in the dream always made sense as far as the dream was concerned. The dreams, however, seldom made sense as far as reality goes.

The dreams, however, seldom made sense as far as reality goes. I remember dreaming of work, during the closing days of projects, when critical audits are approaching. Waking with the terrifying sense that component part #s (alpha-numeric) or Eng. levels didn't line up with the final ass'ys. The only way I could realize a mistake is to have "seen" the incorrect alpha-number codes and recognized them as non-current. Reading while dreaming (for me): Confirmed.

This is a "Can do" thing.....
I have been able to read in Dreams. Mainly because at some point, I was told you CANT read in dreams, and wanted to prove this wrong?... Dont ask, its one of my life disabilities, if someone tells me you cant do something?...
Can not is only something no one has ever done before... Miracles take a little longer, and require booking in advance. I cant remember who said that, its a quote of "Someone", either Monty Python or Spike Milligan.
Anyway, its taken many years, but now, when dreaming, I can READ..... Of course, some will say that that requires concious thought?... am I then semi-awake?... I cant answer that.
However, I have never read anything that was worth the reading.... But there was some funny stuff about Frogs and Sheep?.....
I therefore enter that if you try, you can, eventually, read whilst dreaming.
This can also be linked to someone saying you only dream in black-and-white..... Not true. I dream in technicolour....

In the 80s I read an article about "lucid" dreaming and controlled dreaming. the first is when the dreamer is aware they are dreaming, and the second is when they consciously manipulate the dream sequence. one of the ways the article said to recognize a dream was to read a sign and then re-read it to see if it changed.
I have read circumstantial things in dreams, but have not read, for example, a book or newspaper.
I have, on occasion, remembered a dream long enough to jot down some quick notes, and then write a short story based on the dream later.

Almost forgot to post it here.
About a month or so back, I had a dream in which I went into a video arcade. In a back corner of the arcade was a series of three vintage 1980s Transformer-themed pinball tables.
One of the tables had a sign on the side talking about how people could purchase a "home" version of the game. The information was supposed to flash on the main screen, but my cat woke me up before the information came up.
