Is anyone into geocaching? My six-year-old daughter has recently taken an interest in geocaching and, in an effort to help her, I've been looking at the internet (geocaching.com) and an Android app (c: geo) for assistance. So far, we are 0 for 3. We went to the general location based on map information and then searched for the cached location using GPS coordinates (c: geo has GPS/compass tracking as a feature).
Our first serach was about an half-mile from home. But, unfortunately, the coords led us to fenced-off water company property laden with 'No trespassing' signs (Later checks on online logs had other searchers attesting to the enforcement of the signs...) I assumed that one rule of geocaching would that the the cache has to be on public property - is this a correct assumption? Or, is it possible to be on private property (i.e., large office complex) with permission of owners?
Another search led us to the PEZ Factory (about two miles from home); the hint was the word 'Magnetic', so we searched on/around everything metal located roughly at the GPS coords. Based on online logs, someone had located it the previous day and claimed it was easy to find. Over half-an-hour of searching an 1000 square foot area yielded nothing. We even looked for spots that appeared dug up, but came up blank.
Today, I spent part of my lunch break searching for a cache around the building where I work, but came up blank again. Am I not searching hard enough? Should I expect to have to dig or climb to find the cache?
Any hints/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
