I got a special request today from one of my mom's friends. The friend has a grandchild who enjoys aircraft of all sorts. Said friend is thinking of getting him a wooden model aircraft, one of the big fancy ones that come pre-assembled and have their own bases, as something for his room. I warned her ahead of time that, while this isn't one of the fields of toy / hobby collecting that I specialize in, from the little bit I've seen we'd be looking at a very hefty price tag even if I did succeed in hunting any down. The cheapest place I've found so far that sells them is this site, which is charging $60 - $70 apiece. Thing is, the site is so shoddy that I question the kind of operation they're running. Everyone else I've seen so far is wanting $200 - $400 apiece. Anyone know a place I can check out that's both reputable and relatively inexpensive? Thanks.

I cant recommend any site on the internet.... Thats the thing with Wood, you cant see what you are buying. Is there nowhere local you can find that has a shop? Otherwise, is the child an experienced mode maker?... how old is he?... If capable, this site www.outerzone.co.uk/ has free downloadable plans to build your own..... This is (I think) a P47......

I just checked, and yes it is a P-47 (probably a P-47B, as the D had a different cockpit canopy.)
Try looking at local museums, local flying clubs - maybe even try the local airbase (if there is one) or local modelling clubs. For the amount of money you've been talking about you could almost get an RC aircraft, so maybe see if there are any RC aircraft/flying clubs in the area. You might be able to pick up an RC aircraft (minus the electronics and engine ect) cheaply through them. Or they might be able to point you towards someone who makes RC aircraft, and who may be willing to custom make you one - again without the engine ect.
The Smithsonian has a couple of aircraft models for sale starting at around $115 and going up to $450 (give or take). I don't know if these are wooden (probably not), but they are probably high quality.

Wooden aircraft models are not my thing. If collecting pre-assembled models I would collect Die Cast Metal myself. Though This link may be helpful. It seems to contain links to numerous model aircraft companies.

I am also inclined to inquire whether the grandchild is old enough to respect the model as nothing more than a decoration. (not knowing the grandchild, I don't know)

Good pre-assembled die cast models can be found even in the toy aisles at Walmart leading up to Christmas. Also dedicated toy stores and hobby stores.
