I recently watched a movie in which US issue fragmentation grenades were used. when the pin was pulled and the spoon released, there was an audible clockwork sound effect. I figure this will get a quick answer - but had to post - REALLY? do modern frag grenades have a clockwork timer? (or any audible sound that indicates they are active?)

Just a burning fuze that is ignited by a primer. The spoon holds down a spring loaded striker. Release the spoon and the spring pushes the striker up, which also pushes the spoon up and off. I never heard anything from a live frag grenade other than the spoon and stiker making a noise. I never on to one long enough to to listen for anything. Smoke grenades, you can hear a sizzling PFSSST sound but they have very little delay between the striker activating the fuze and the material starting to burn and produce smoke, plus the body isn't a cast iron shell, so the sound comes out pretty well.

That was what I thought. guess the director wanted to add tension.

As I understand it, the fuse in the Mk. II made an audible hissing noise while burning, but that's it.

As I understand it, the fuse in the Mk. II made an audible hissing noise while burning, but that's it. Correct. I was unfortunate enough to once stand next to a dude in foxhole at a grenade range who thought it would be fun to hold on to the grenade for about 1½ second after releasing the spoon, just to hear if it made a sound and to see if he could make it explode in mid-air. There was indeed a hissing noise. Needless to say that he was not praised for that particular stunt.
