www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2336123/George-Michael-wont-face-charges-falling-car-motorway.htmlI cite the above.... But I have to ask, I have tried to open a car door whilst travelling at speed, it is bloody difficult?.... Can you open a normal car door, one with hinges at the front, whilst travelling at up to 70 mph (or above...) Enough to "Fall out"?........... Suicide doors, ones with hinges at the rear, were dissuaded in this country, due to the number of accidents with them flying open. Modern ones with double doors have to have the front door open first.

I'll have to go back and find it later, but there's dash cam footage of a drunken woman kicking open the door to an American police cruiser and tumbling onto the highway; IIRC, she had to go to the bathroom and didn't want to (or perhaps couldn't) wait until the car got back to the station.

tender 23 was a mid 70s "screaming" Jimmy (GMC) cabover. one day I didn't get the passenger door properly latched after throwing my gear in to go to drill.
all the way down the my road, (at speeds between 50 and 60) the door would swing open on left hand turns, and closed on right hand turns - but not quite hard enough to latch.
addendum: as for falling out... well, my gear didn't fall out. but then, my gear wasn't opening and closing the door.

Is there a noticeable difference at higher speed.... "Motorway" speeds here in UK, although we always "say" we are doing 70, is more typically 80 to 90...?....
There must be a speed that you cant open the door at?... By this, I mean a conventional car door hinged at the front.
(I already know you can open "a" door at over 100 mph, I would be stupid to say not, because I have been thrown out of one, being a Hercules rear door doing a parachute drop.)

I had not noticed the article estimating the speed they were travelling, which could have been an oversight. was the 70 the estimated speed they were going, or is it the posted speed for the motorway? I recall you referring to one motorway as the world's largest circular car park.

I've seen that clip, the woman kicked out the rear side window of the cruiser and slid feet first through the window - while still handcuffed. She survived, although she did end up with the worlds bloodiest mug shot.... Diving out of a car is one of the myths that will be tested in the current run of show.

I recall you referring to one motorway as the world's largest circular car park. The posted speed for a motorway is 70mph, but a lot of drivers go faster. The world's largest circular car park is presumably the M25 around London, but that's down to the amount of traffic on it.

Yes the M25, though it is possible in non peak times to go the posted 70mph limit, though large parts have variable limits with electronic sights that lower the limit in bad weather, due to accidents etc.
In younger more foolish days have gone a 100mph plus in a Nissan Micra after midnight getting back home from a night out.

You actually could figure out the force on a door at a given speed. It has been a while since I have dealt with this and I don't have my text books handy. They are at work, so this is based off memory.
F=1/2*A*cf*dM/dt*sin(theta)
A=area of door cf=coefficient of friction based on shape of door dM/dt=massflow rate of air (density * velocity) Theta= angle of door with respect to car.
From there it is a mater of finding the speed when force on the door is equal to what you can exert.

Someone handcuff Tori to the tailgate of a stationary camera truck.... DO NOT let him try that.
I know. I have had reason to bail out at speed... well, more of I got knocked off a bike "T"bone style by a smidsy, at over 30mph, I still have the scars and weakened left leg 30 years later.
