I'm curious what has become of the producer who was in the fracas. has he continued to produce, or has he been quietly sacked? I have the impression some of the production end of the show had been trying to emulate American reality TV, and that was a part of the problems the show had.

I think he left the show, but continues to work at the BBC.

He left as mentioned under his own steam to continue working on the ex-top gear live show. [or so it has been reported... who knows if that is the truth...?.. keep reading...]
There will be a extended "last show" of all the bits filmed yet not released on BBC two to clear up what they already had in the can.
May and Hammond have recently been "interviewed", but have given useless answers, as in, because Chris Evans has been linked to a return of TGI Friday, May is saying he will be doing a TGI Thursday TV show, and Hammond says he will be returning to Radio to do an early morning show with the BBC... Evans old slot. Get the idea Evans has been in cahoots with them three?... I think all of them are intentionally misleading any interviewer to not tell them anything useful, because, that on its own promotes what they will really be doing.
The Netflix suggestion may also be a red herring.... They may be working with a Commercial TV company. Or not. Depends on who you can believe in this week. Or not.
In other words, apart from continuing to fulfil the "Live" shows as promised, as people already have tickets, no one has been told the whole truth on whats happening next.
The only thing we know for sure is that Hammond and May left BBC 2 "just to pizza them off", and no matter what was on the table when they were invited to renew the contract, they would have left anyway, but that again was a "Not at this time" thing, they wanted a break from the show, it has been a long time running, they wanted some solid time off with NO filming at all, and no pressure... Except keeping their promises to appear on the live shows.
Of course, what I have stated here may be as far from the truth as anything else, in many ways, even "Insider" news is being kept in the dark, and why would I be able to find out anything more than anyone else?... My own "Bothan" just works for the BBC now and again. Maybe he knows things he wont repeat?.. Or not.

I would think if I were interviewing May for the first time after the end of contract interview I would have asked how the shepherds pie came out.

May be? Will be.
Although shows like Top Gear are produced in house by the BBC, even they don't produce all of their content. A lot is contracted out to private production companies. (Something that has caused some controversy as this has resulted in the BBC loosing a lot of their in-house talent).
A move to netflix wouldn't be all that surprising, as they have been increasing the amount of new and exclusive programming they have available in he last few years. Basically they seem to be aiming to be their own network in all but name. Although a fair chunk of this has been with productions from outside the company, such as Daredevil. They have been making (or at least commissioning) some shows of their own. For them Top Gear, even if by another name, would be the perfect flagship program. An internationally known and liked cast along with a comparatively low budget per episode...chances are good that they would get far more viewers than would be needed to cover production costs and make a fair profit.

And on that bombshell...It is front page news that Clarkson was offered his job back at Top Gear just days before Chris Evans got the job. From here.... www.onenewspage.co.uk/video/20150619/2996674/Jeremy-Clarkson-Claims-BBC-Exec-Offered-Return-to.htmThe Sun www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/6508040/EXCLUSIVE-Jeremy-Clarkson-was-asked-back-to-front-Top-Gear.htmlIts in several other sources, Even here, whilst I was writingt this post, it says 6mins ago, so they are behind me with the news.... www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-33196131So they will return to the TV then?.. but maybe not BBC, it has been reported Netflix, but not officially confirmed, it may go to a rival channel, like C4, who knows for sure? ALSO, from that story, .... Get in there if you want the slot?... I wont, I cant, I dont have the physical ability to do all their stunts. However.... It is also reported the senior producer has stated there is no definite agenda to find a Female presenter, stating the best person for the job on an equality basis, regardless of Gender, Creed, Religion or any other factor. Chris Evans has stated he DEFINITELY wants a Lady presenter. This may break later, its not commonly reported as of yet.

Chris Evans.... I've always found him annoying.
He's like Clarkson but without the humor or the ability to take as well as he gives.
Anyone working with him better be prepared to be the butt of his lack of actual humor

He is one of those who will demand the camera on him most of the time, unless something unfortunate is happening to someone else.

and it is now official that the ginger whinger WILL be hosting the show, and he declares he will not be creating controversy as creating controversy is the last resort of someone with nothing else to offer. (which strikes the writers of the article as a veiled stab at clarkson.) he says what changed his mind was May and Hammond refusing to sign back on.
I will be a fair man and if it comes to my TV, I will give it a watch. if it is good, I will continue, if it is lame, I will not.

You may need ty6o ask who wrote the article, as Evans has promised over here he WILL be pushing the edge, as he says "Thats what the show is all about" May I suggest that the writer of the article you saw is less informed than many, as it was well known that May and Hammond were not coming back, and indeed they are holding open auditions, send a video of yourself to BBC, to find other presenters. As Clarkson was made to apologise for NOT saying something that was leaked, may I also suggest some of the more controversial stuff is scripted anyway, and Clarkson was just the mouthpiece. Who did write your article?... I think Ironhold would have done a better job. He would have known that Evans would not have a stab at Clarkson, as they are good friends, and Evans has always been a HUGE fan of the show. Clarkson, controversial by design, he is "Marmite", you love or hate, and as many love as hate, but he is also the ex head of the BBC's most successful show. And when I say head, I mean Head, he made it what it is, it was him who dragged it back out again and re-invented it. Perhaps they says a lot for the UK public, and indeed the world, we all like a little controversy?... For me, I always liked Clarkson, he can say what he wants, and maybe what he says needs saying, because in all his years of writing a column for the Sun newspaper, he has had few complaints. Well, maybe a few from the pomped up oiks he may target now and again....

I caught it in the clickbait headlines on a site linked for other news based out of the UK, forget which one. something posted the same day as my above. as for taking a poke at Clarkson, I would not expect being friends to preclude that; and in fact, I would expect being friends to precipitate that. clarkson: you left out love to hate. as I say, he comes off as an arrogant pompous cheating so-and-so and that's why we love watching him. and yes, I'm sure it was all a manufactured publicity piece.
