today I learned, through Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, COVID edition, that there is a swedish mining village that is responsible for the discovery of SEVEN rare earth elements (four of which are named after it)

Attempting to learn the hobby of gold prospecting involved purchasing at least a pan and a shovel (actually a lot more than that, but anyway), researching all sorts of panning techniques, places to go pan for gold, making trips to various rivers, usually ending up with nothing but mosquito bites, mud and a lot of time wasted. But every once in a while I could find powder-sized specks of ... GOLD!!
However, once weighed, if you could even weigh it, it was all worth a fraction of a penny!! (And I'm talking like 0.0234 cents!) I thought, "how is this even possible!?" But, it is true. Even though gold is respectably valuable, tiny enough tidbits are basically worthless, unless you have enough of them.
And, so, fascinated with this fact, I wrote up an APP for quickly estimating the value of a bit of raw gold just by approximating its size. It's online if you really want to see it.. you can google "QuickGoldTally" all one word and you'll probably find the calculator. It is one of those Geocities type HTML pages.
Anyway, what I learned today is...
Finding a penny on the sidewalk is way better, easier, more valuable than any of the prospecting I did. By a HUGE factor!
I'm now an avid sidewalk inspector.
It's amazing the value of loose change when compared to all that above that I went through, I can tell you!

It's amazing the value of loose change when compared to all that above that I went through, I can tell you! on one vacation, we crossed paths with a guy running a briefcase sized gold sluice. we got to chatting with him, and he was a gold miner in alaska by profession. when he was home, he'd sluice for gold in local creeks, as a hobby. he picked up 4 or 5 flakes in the half hour we were chatting. completely unrelated, Mrs B's father took up prospecting a few years before his death. her mother offered his stuff to us, but we told her to pass it along to another hobby prospector who wanted to buy it from her. it's good to know we made the right decision.

After watching a couple of episodes of one of those gold prospecting reality TV shows on, I think it was history channel, it appears that also doing it on a large scale is a losing proposition.

After watching a couple of episodes of one of those gold prospecting reality TV shows on, I think it was history channel, it appears that also doing it on a large scale is a losing proposition. Yeah. I know. I never pictured getting rich or anything. Especially just as a time-wasting hobby. But many days of it and only raking together 0.023 cents or whatever!? It's insane what looks valuable at a glance in a pan turns out to be dirt (not paydirt) just because it ends up being tinier than it looks. Like I say, now i find myself DIVING onto any pennies found on the ground. By comparison, it looks better than gold to me at the moment. Whereas, before, I'd never pick up a penny off the ground. Oh, no! I'm too good for that... at least up until now that is!

yesterday I learned a new technique for using a rollback tow truck for prying a vehicle out of a ditch. and no I didn't learn it from ice road tow truckers. I learned it from a rookie driver here at home.
also came up with a new tagline: "we're not in Canada. closure IS an option."

Would love to hear some of his stories. he said he never hit a boat or an airplane. Maybe I should ask him if submarines are included with boats.

Chris Wallace has announced that after 18 years, he is leaving the Fox Corporation to do streaming interviews for CNN+ They must have offered him a contract worth millions, otherwise why would he leave a show he's hosted for 18 years and having a viewership in the millions for a paid subscription service that isn't even off the ground yet. That said, I don't think Fox is losing anything. Hopefully he'll be more successful than Megyn Kelly was after she left Fox. The grass is always greener.

Don't forget that CNN is being hammered left, right, and center by scandals right now, with hosts and staffers alike going down for different things. From what I understand, the latest scandal involves a guy who was dating the single mother of two underage girls... and who basically decided that since the three were a package deal they were basically his personal harem. Yeah... It wouldn't surprise me if they backed a dump truck full of money up to Wallace's house and gave him the keys out of desperation to get anyone they could find with a shred of credibility left.

I'm not used to seeing people accused of molesting young girls actually be arrested, and I see from google that most networks are having issues with sexual misbehavior. but aside from that, it's public knowledge that Wallace walked away from a raise offered by Fox.

today I finally looked up how to change the cabin air filters in my truck, and determined why it should be done every couple decades whether it needs it or not.

On some vehicles they install the filters and then build the dash around them. they almost did. three metric hex screws to drop the shroud off the blower assembly, and then a different metric hex screw to open the access hatch. then one filter slides in from the bottom and towards the firewall, and then the second slides in after it.

today I learned that WD-40 used to be packaged with propane as the propellant, but to make it safer, they have switched to using CO2 as the propellant. this from a youtube video regarding its use as a starting fluid. - which, at least in a gas engine, doesn't work any more.
