We much malign the worst in society.... Probably for blooming good reason, as we all encounter stupid on a daily basis. But now and again, someone does something "Worthwhile", laudable even, something that makes you say "AT LAST".... Can we get some good on here?... I reserve this thread for those who feel some respect is due. I will start.... Dangerous Dogs.... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-27378427The law (UK) now will carry a maximum 14 yr penalty behind bars for those who keep a dog who is allowed to attack people without reason that creates grievous injury..... This comes after a spate of dog related KSI incidents where dogs on the banned list or just dangerous dogs have been kept where Children can get access. Or where they can get access to the child. Credit where credit is due.... The law have done good.

Free Tracking for ALL aircraft.... Worldwide?.... www.traveldailymedia.com/207331/inmarsat-offers-free-aircraft-tracking-in-wake-of-mh370-2/This is in the wake of that missing airliner that went down off Australia. The company that receives data from aircraft engines that can do basic tracking of where that aircraft is, is offering the service of tracking aircraft through that data FREE to anyone who can show good reason to need it. {Air traffic control, the owners of the aircraft, etc.....) Add a few extras, What a bloody good idea?.....

we had a call for a smoke alarm at an assisted living facility in town last night. when the duty officer got there, there really WAS smoke, the irony of which was that one of our Battalion chiefs lectured us at the meeting yesterday evening about taking smoke alarms seriously, because sometimes there is actually fire.
the duty officer was beginning to be concerned, when 6 units reported response, all within a minute of each other. (the sprinkler system contained the fire to the clothes dryer it started in, and the first interior crew simply picked up the dryer and carried it outside. the majority of the fire crew's work was getting the sprinkler stopped, and cleaning up the mess - no injuries and only minor damage, and the facility had enough space to temporarily relocate the residents.)
the irony of the night. the battalion chief who lectured us was not there.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-27394691Google maps is trialing something new... Its adding transport data to local maps. You get bus train coach and other public transport routes, timetables, and updates. Its good, because now you know how to get where you want to go.......... Will it work?.... It just HAS to work. If it does, and it gets fair usage, enough to encourage more public transport use, it will get advertising, and therefore self fund its roll-out worldwide?... One can only live in Hope. Which is a small town in Derbyshire, near Buxton. {Go on, google it, see if you can find the bus route there....) I hear they have plans to add local traffic updates.

nokia's "here transit" is doing that for a long time in quite a few countries already, it's linked to nokia's maps apps, which is one of the best navigation software apps.
I actually nowadays prefer my nokia over my tomtom, even though the tomtom is a subscriber updated stand alone, where the nokia app is free but much more accurate.

For typical use, no software or GPS gadget beats a good map and good compass, when linked with the knowledge and ability to use them. For typical road use, a good road map can't be beat. GPS is a luxury.*
*Yes, I own a GPS ( Maggellan Road Mate), but I route plan with a hard copy map and keep a map handy for the inevitable failure of software/gadget.

GPS is a luxury. An up-to-date map on a roadtrip allows you to look at all the routes simultaneously unlike GPS or apps. I still take maps & atlases with me on roadtrips.

I would think you would still have to dry the socket and related clothing pretty well, to prevent wetness related problems.

Read twice, then again, the first two times I was thinking how would vaccinating against Mercedes help?.. and would a BMW vaccination do the same?.... Mercedes vaccine? Does it make you oblivious to the arrogant guy in the overpriced car who tailgated you for five miles, cut around you barely missing your front bumper, and then proceeded to slow down?

in the tiny pleasures column - I've had a small sore on a knuckle for a couple of weeks - which I suspected was due to a foreign object embedded in it - and a couple days ago, it finally worked its way to the surface, and I got it with tweezers.

Sunday night I was watching the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS and my 7-year-old daughter decided to join me. She asked very thoughtful about the meaning of the concert and seemed to understand why we have Memorial Day. At the end, the entire cast sang "God Bless America", which my daughter performed in sign language (she learned it in kindergarten last year).
