that would not pass muster in my house. way too many ingredients in both. my biscuits have flour, salt, shortening, and milk, and my gravy has sausage, flour, salt, and milk. as explained by a few brits - they use biscuit for hard cookies, and cookie for soft cookies. so technically, pretty much any "cookie" you get in the grocery store would be biscuits.

if I heard the numbers right, our Christmas food and toy drive served 260 families this year.

I once literally had someone from the UK tell me that when they first heard "biscuits and gravy" they thought of digestives and Bisto. So apparently this is an area where English being a common language is actually leading to confusion rather than understanding.

The local Lions Club has a tradition of running a Christmas tree lot as part of their fund raising operations. This year, soon after they opened for the year, a local business and came and bought every tree that they had (for full price) and told them to give all the trees out to people looking to purchase them. Most of the customers insisted on paying anyway once they found out that the trees were being given out.

Most of the customers insisted on paying anyway once they found out that the trees were being given out. some old friends I had, would run a Christmas tree lot in Hawaii every year, and the first year, they found out the custom is for the people who run the lot to abandon the trees at the end of the business day, christmas eve, and then the people who couldn't afford a tree ($100, plus, even back then) would come see if they could get an abandoned tree. once they found that out, they would always hold back a few choice trees to leave behind. we have several holiday bazaars around town in the run up to Christmas, and I'm going to suggest our volunteers might set up to provide sherpa services to the bazaar folks, for donations. money to go to the volunteers' association, and goods to be raffled or auctioned off at district open house events, or at the awards banquet.

Yesterday, Children's Television Workshop - the people behind Sesame Street - had the social media account for their Elmo character ask the public how they were doing as a means to get a conversation going on the importance of checking in with your circle of contacts.
A *lot* of people admitted that they weren't doing so hot and did in fact need a friend.
This has now led to additional attention being paid to mental health, social isolation, and other conditions, with CTW doing a series of follow-ups encouraging people to keep touch with those folks in their lives.
So it seems that this time around a publicity stunt actually did some good by reminding people to adopt better communication habits.

My string trimmer ran out of line. NO problem, I have more line on hand. My trimmer has a head that is supposed to be able to be loaded by threading the line in and turning the head, no tools or taking it apart needed. So I read the manual and watch a couple Youtube videos on it. I could not get that thing to work. I spend a 4 day weekend trying and failing to get it to load the new line.
I am getting to the point where I am seriously looking at getting a new trimming head for the thing. I tell my son that if he can figure it out, it's worth $20 him. I figure that I am already looking at $80-100 for a new trimmer head, so if he can do it, I am saving money.
That bugger comes back half an hour later and says "you owe me $20."

I know they're supposed to be less damaging on and around things, but the expendability annoys me.
