Here's the thing, SD: I would have said the same thing until I saw the footage. And please don't blame the police. In rural areas, law enforcement is often a long way from where the crime occurs. Some don't even have police, just the county sheriff. Or, as some people say: "When seconds count, the police are minutes away..." Even in rural California, it can take an hour for law enforcement to appear. That's why it seems to the rest of us that some of those rural areas almost have their own laws. And you're right about the size of America being a thing most of us who come from smaller countries don't think about when talking about these things. I mean, Denmark is like half the size of the state of Maine and Maine ain't that big compared to the rest of the US to begin with. It's difficult for someone like me to imagine a place in my own country that's so "backwoods" it's practically outside the rule of law. You can get to pretty much anywhere in Denmark in less than 4 hours by car. You couldn't cross the state of Kansas from East to West in that amount of time. yeah. my home state is 300 miles in the short dimension. California is around 1000 miles, top to bottom.

morning news says they are having devastating rains and flooding in texas. no word from the fundies of what God is mad at them about. Just realized I'd missed this one. Fundies... Am I the only one who finds it mildly hillarious that the nickname given to religious fundamentalist groups that aren't exactly known for their liberal views on sex sounds like something someone's wife or girlfriend might wear on date night to spice things up a bit?

Heh heh heh... I knew it would cause some thought, it sure as hell stumps me. However, before I see your answer, may I put into play, we are living in a world where our daily lives are still affected by religion, therefore, as the religion of the person I address may affect how I live my life, and in fact, I am governed by the very "I sear by the gods, all of them, to tell almost the truth as far as I can tell, the whole truth as far as I can remember, and nothing but the truth, as long as I can make it clear how I interpret it, so help me any deity who may be listening", and therefore the church of England is "in power" in our legal system, I am duly affected by religion I may not always agree to. In that case, if I disagree, because it DOES affect me, but not in a religious way, I feel that as a co-inhabitor of the world, I am therefore quite right in my ability to free speech my way this far.... I see your ponderings. However, I always state "But doesnt your religion ask that" when I am about to point out something I believe they have missed. In that way, its a discussion, and again, as I say elsewhere, as long as it is a discussion of friends, its valid, as it looks like an enquiry... If it gets beyond that state, into a heated discussion, amongst friends, by that time they will know I am on the outside looking in and therefore fast and free to question. If it gets to a belligerent state, make your point, move on, and state "You believe what you want to believe, I believe you are wrong" and walk away. Religion Football and Politics, all a game played by limited teams with thousands of referees who may make a different call. Thats a completely different game... thats Ice Hockey isnt it?... Same is true in phrance.... we would send them help ASAP, but they have a bloody train strike on, and the phrench ATC Air traffic have announced strikes as well. They may have banned flying over their territory, but the gods of thunder-pants is still flying clouds?... Nature respects no rule but her own. On to that, I have a religion that maybe some will recognise but none may fully understand. "Shamanistic" I may not need to formally worship at the alter of any church, but that doesnt mean I cannot respect the natural world and believe that there is some "force" at work that makes mockery of other religion..... You gotta respect that one eh?. I have noted TLW's ability to sum up a whole post of mine in less than 10 words... and miss nothing.... Disconcerting?. Or is it I just like to run my fingers off a bit when letting off steam?... Yeah, I get it, I have the tendency to "long post" something.... I knew we were paying him for something or other.... Hi Loki, your awake then?... [cheesy grin....]

next explanation: because if you were committing an act of hypocrisy, you would want someone to call you out on it. therefore despite not formaly adhering to it, you are not breaking it.

Me a bloody angel?.. look I may have wings, but the army of angels and I agree to disagree?...
On the score of "there was nothing in those slogans that justified a violent response. Period." I may have to argue in the slogans, no, but in the response to the allegation that at the petrol station they were "advised" to "Loo there is some rags go wipe that sh[*]t off before you gets in trouble" which they chose to ignore, in favour of a certain "Producer" who decided it may be "fun" to rile up the locals, well......
Yeah, I know, its a nasty one. By the producer who may or may not have a name like Ricin OhMan, there was a tenancy to "Script in" some antagonistic stuff on the fly... hence the Clarkson stating "There is a slope on the bridge" and the infamous apology for REFUSING to allow a racist kids poem to be read out on screen?...
I would say that the scene was partly genuine, partly "Lets have some fun with this" and partly "That escalated quickly didnt it?." And on the locals getting annoyed by the TG crew deciding to show them all as redneck hill-billies?.. erm, not so sure, if TG had come to Manchester and made us all look like back-woods slow retarded Great Train robbers in waiting, I think you may have had some reaction like that?.. Not all of Manchester is football hooliganism, as some people have portrayed.... Thats less than 0.01% of Manchester. Thats like saying London is 100% greedy Bankers.... Oh, maybe bad analogy?. Maybe it is close to that anyway?... Lets use Cockney Pearly Kings and Queens. Thats more like it......

In Manchester there is a local law that sort of implies "Dont CR@P on your own doorstep". Dont make love At the garden Gate Love may be blind. But the neighbours aint. ....[various sources...]
Laws carry from place to place, local laws may prohibit driving sheep through town on a lunch period, we have discussed this elsewhere, in that there must have been reason to invent those laws, for is the seem crazy to us, there must have been a perfectly good reasonable reason to have them invented in the first place.
I may argue quite well that if there is places where the local law is sparse, and often not fully employed when it is, then obviously the local law enforcement of the locals not causing enough trouble to have a larger police presence is "Obviously working"...... And yes, I do want to live in a place like that.
My Father lived in a time when the local beat bobby was part of the community, someone to talk too, someone to express your worries to, someone who would sort out all kinds of problems, and would know who was "The usual suspect" as soon as a crime was committed, it was a pro-active force. Now its a re-active force.. and its lost its personality.

Also, I always found it funny that "fundament" is a synonym for "buttocks".

I think it's "foundation garments". Bras, girdles, etc.

Heh heh heh... I knew it would cause some thought, it sure as hell stumps me. TLW hits the nail on the head again with this: because if you were committing an act of hypocrisy, you would want someone to call you out on it. therefore despite not formaly adhering to it, you are not breaking it. That's the one I was looking for! It's hypocritical to break one rule in order to tell someone else they're breaking another. I'm not breaking the "treat others as you would like them to treat you" rule, because I've actually gone through the motions of asking myself the question, "Would I like someone else to point it out to me if I was doing the same?" and the answer to that question is yes. Yes I would, so I am in fact treating others like I would like them to treat me. And I'm stealing this : "I swear by the gods, all of them, to tell almost the truth as far as I can tell, the whole truth as far as I can remember, and nothing but the truth, as long as I can make it clear how I interpret it, so help me any deity who may be listening" On this: I have noted TLW's ability to sum up a whole post of mine in less than 10 words... and miss nothing.... Disconcerting?. Or is it I just like to run my fingers off a bit when letting off steam?... Yeah, I get it, I have the tendency to "long post" something.... I think you and I are both the kind of people who need to put our thoughts into words before we're 100% sure what we really think. We might get half or even 90% of the way in our heads before speaking/typing, but about half of it is thrown out and the rest falls into place as the words come out. That often leads to a lot of words TLW has a knack for picking all those words apart and finding the essence of what I'm trying to say. I don't find that disconcerting at all. I find it helpful. I'm never quite sure I got it all, because even as I hit "Create Post", my mind is still working, asking and answering questions. Reading his much shorter summary of it sometimes puts the pieces into place for me, assures me that I actually did get my message across and quiets down all the chatter in my head that's still there after posting.

I think it is a product of being raised by women. when I can only get one word in edgewise, it has to be a good one. (ducks and runs before Lex gets back on duty)

The word ratio between my wife and I is about 3000 to 1. It's not as bad as one would think. I've developed the art of very selective hearing.
