"We have rules". Yeah yeah yeah.... right.... Ok, so, I cam across one, all lights must be taped. This is back when I went racing, all light lenses MUST be taped, so that when the glass breaks, it wont immediately fall out all over the ground and puncture tyres. This was from before they invented plastic lens caps, when many of them were glass. Of course, we turn up on a "New" bike, "Tape your glass".... One of the other riders with the same bike, half joking, he says "I aint got none?... All of us have new plastic lens covers over headlight, tail, and indicators (Lightweight as well...).... It had to go to the clerk of the course to "Decide" if modern shatter-proof plastic lens that wont break at the first impact of a wasp that just had its dinner will be "Safe" enough to not need tape... And safe enough to not need further measures as well. "We have rules" Some people will just use rules to unsettle the opponent. If they THINK you have an advantage, they may use the rules to check (By reporting anything strange), or by doing whatever they can to unsettle your concentration. reminds me of a summer I played in a coed softball league. one of the league rules was all bats must be softball bats. - well I had a wood bat that I preferred, which my mother had been given by her uncle who was a minor league softball coach. - one of the other team captains challenged it and it was disqualified as not being a softball bat. why, you may ask? it didn't have tape on the grip. yes, the difference between a softball bat and a baseball bat is that a softball bat has tape on the grip. the fact that it didn't match the size and shape profile of a baseball bat was irrelevant.

So, Rivers throws for 500 yards against what I think is really the best team in football, the Packers, you get to the goal line and you do what? 2 draw plays? Really McCoy? Can't you change up your plays? Everyone knows what you are doing and it didn't work the first time and you did it a second and it didn't work then.

On the bright side though, remember back when no one would have ever thought Philip Rivers would throw for 500 yards in a full season, let alone in one game? Coaches come and go, but a QB like him doesn't come along often.

Unless you're trying to run out the clock, that just doesn't make sense...

Unless you're trying to run out the clock, that just doesn't make sense... if you do it occasionally, it makes some sense. if you repeat every play three times, someone on the other team is going to notice.

starting to wonder what exactly kind of pictures rooney has of the glazer family that allows him to still be on the field every damn game..... They are pictures of the Queen, in Brown and Folding. And plenty of them. He is paid over £300,000 per WEEK in wages and endorsements. (Latest best guess from media sources...) He HAS to play to get those kind of wages... And he dun know it. ..btw, I did see his contract once, but, client confidentiality, I ant allowed to even tell you that... But I left that job, so sod them.... he asked for 350,000 a week. And bloody well GOT IT. In reply, Alex Ferguson stated to them "Upstairs" how the hell can he expect respect from any player earning more than him?... In reply, Alex Ferguson got a wage rise.... undisclosed amount, but more than the rooney. Shortly after that, Alex announced his retirement plans. I know for sure he has lost his interest in being a manager because he was disillusioned with the game going "Chequebook football", that and the phrase "I am getting too old for all this [crud]".... It isnt a picture of the Glaziers that makes the difference, its the fact the team is more than any one person, and the team is Manchester United. ... When you play with the best, you play AT your best, or get replaced by someone else who can... whatever the cost. The new manager has made that plain. Not "Special snowflake" in his team, you play together, eat together, train together, as a team, or go. United have a shot on goal this season, they have the chance to take the premiership by storm. Will they?.. Only history will tell. But where are they now?. DESPITE all the nay-sayers that United are "Finished" (Mostly from those who wear blue?..) United are where?... In the TOP FIVE of the premiership... ANY team, whoever they are, that manage to get in the top five of the premiership have got there by pure luck?.. United are far from dead, or, they are like me, they may have died but didnt stop moving yet?.. and moving UP. Rooney is "Part" of that team, he better prove his worth, or ship out... And whop else would pay him that kind of wage?.. its not as if he is some "Poster boy" model or anything is it?..

Silver, I think you missed the point of the comment - which was to ask what leverage rooney had that kept the glazer family from reassigning him to ride the bench.

"Contract" His contract says he MUST be part of the "First eleven" on something like "Whenever fit enough to do so", or "Show good reason to bench him". That sort of says if he is match fit, they MUST play him as much as possible to get as many games in as possible, so when he is benched, it wont make as much of a dent in the number of games he has to play... Contract also may state that he MUST be available for "England" games. If you dont get [X] Number of games per season [Dependant on contract agreement] you can be in breech of contract and be put on the transfer list. Transfer list is.. well... if he is sold, he may not get the same wage agreement....?... If he is benched, he may not be worth as much in transfer fees. It in not only in HIS interest, but in his financial owners interest, to fulfil his contract.

Shrecks Donkey as he is sometimes known is NOT good value for money. I am not a fan of him....
However, he has a contract that "promises" him.... [xyz]
If the team are in breach of the contract, and bench him unnecessarily, the legal costs of proving they have good reason etc etc etc.
Yeah it twists more times than a long length of rope, and some clever (xyz) has gone over this to make sure he is "all that he is" to get the best out of him... That would be his manager?.. HIS manager, his "Agent", his paid-for piece of (xyz) that gets his 15%...
You may here sometimes a comment "Player power" that the players have more power than the team... this isnt so. Its the "Handlers", the agents who make it so, that get their cut, every time he gets paid. They are the same as "Lawyers" in their greed and determination. They are ruining the game.
In my original post in reply, I am still not happy with his wage bill, but as it has been pointed out to me, if they dont play him, at the end of his contract., he can just walk. No transfer fee. Plus when you have paid all that money, you dont want it sat idle?.. The team want their full value out of him. He isnt a bad player, just not as good as he is paid.
I am NOT happy with him, the whole situation of the player worth more than the whole of the team in the division below, and the truth that one months wages of the Shecks Donkey could run Stalybridge Celtic fr a year.
I would bench him as well. But, I know they cant afford to do that... The legal bill to throw his whining agent back out on the street are one reason, that alone would pay the whole wage bill for a lower division team.
Unfortunately, "Contract".

This is the state of "Premier league" football. It turns over more money per year than the whole of the lower leagues.
Match day at Man U or any other top flight team, £150 all in, for a "family" of Dad and two kids. Lower league, ticket $15, half time brew and butty, $10, parking free. kids ticket £5. Tell me again how precious premier league is?...
Forget the premier league, and the lower leagues have more fun... especially when at the end of season, you may get promoted up a league... THATS the prize.... silverware, and a promotion at the same time?.

Between the UK premier league, which is definately the worst money pit, and the big spanish, german, italian and french clubs, the football leagues of smaller countries have more or less been robbed empty of exciting players.
It used to be that PSV or Ajax would be interesting to watch on champions league matches, nowadays they're just speed bumps in the qualifier/group stages.

I have a kid on the handball team I help coach who's been into soccer since he was 5. He still plays, but he's thinking about quitting soccer and just focusing on handball now. Reason? He's starting to see his 10-year old team mates do what's called "filming" in soccer. That thing where the slightest bump gets them on the ground, screaming like someone drove a spear through them, trying to get a penalty. He hates it! As he put it: "It's starting to be more fun to play soccer with girls, because they act less like girls than the boys do."

I'm sure you've seen me refer to professional soccer as a competitive diving exhibition. (in the US, unless water and springboards are involved "diving" refers to the act of faking injury in order to draw a foul on the opponent)

And I find it really sad that kids as young as 10 years old are seeing the pros take those dives on TV and starting to emulate them that early. It's ruining the game for kids like the boy I mentioned who really just want to play and have fun.
