Thanks Cyber, I thought I had seen this before on this board. But I figured TUM had searched so I didn't bother.

We've seen the MBs shoot projectiles made out of ice, but how about when the object shooting the projectiles is made out of ice? This is actually a rehash from the old board. I remember it created some really intriguing dialogue about the technicalities and potential pitfalls to testing whether or not this is at all possible. Things we had gone over: -How to create the cannon? (use a mold vs chisel a large block) -Keeping the cannon frozen throughout the test. -What type of projectile? (should the cannonball also be ice?) -What are the benchmarks for determining plausibility? Good list. I guess the best method to make the cannon (mold, chiseling, etc...) could be another the-three-build-team-members-make-three-different-versions type thing. Whichever method they'd use, the best material imho would be that bubble-free ice they used to make fire with. Any air bubbles in the ice would IMHO weaken the ice. Oh, and I guess we can agree that we're looking for a "real" cannon here, that uses gunpowder or other explosives to shoot the projectile, not a compressed air cannon - that would probably be relatively easy to make and would totally walk around the original problem of ice having to withstand the heat generated by the powder. bio

As it turns out we came up with three different possible propellents; Gunpowder, flammable gas (aka a spud gun) and compressed air.
