Whilst browsing today, I was "Halted" with a bloody pop up... "Can we talk"... I am on my sandbox linux thing at the moment, so "hmm interesting lest see where this goes"... It opened up a page "Overlay" with "Demands"
The demands were either you disable adblock+plus, OR, get proboards plus.... the pay for version...
I wont go into it because it didnt last long, because I have u-block origin and "Knowledge", but that little diversion had no other "Out" than to accept either of those two choices for maybe other users without suck knowledge. Therefore, it is "Ransom-ware".
As some of you are aware of the recent and ongoing cyber attacks around the world, you can imagine, I am pretty much totally against ransom-ware of any type...
I therefore request a discussion on what we, the people of this board, can "put up with", and how intrusive this may get by proboards if we decide to continue with ad-block-pop-up-block of any type.
I do however request that the moderators here may open a discussion with Pro-boards on their use of Cyber "Bullying" and use of a "Ransome-ware" attack to prevent use of third party adblockers.

Personally, although I see your point, SD, I always end up in the "Their house; their rules" position.
They have to pay the rent somehow, and servers aren't free.
I haven't seen the warning myself, yet.
Since everything here is free ice cream, and they let us pretty much do what we want, I find it hard to complain.

I've found closing the tab and opening another makes it go away pretty well. I would be inclined to consider greenlisting proboards, because we do get a "free" * service from them. however, there is that whole minimally tech savvy thing going on. *if you are getting something for free, you are not the customer, you are the product being sold

I have found that by blocking the java script with U-Block origin, you can banish the pop-up. I will not be supplying further data on this as what will follow will be University Degree level programming language development of a permanent banish for the scrip that runs the pop up as an add-on to Firefox. This is in development by my Kid who is "Home for summer", and is a lot further up the ladder in script writing than I am. He is doing this as a programming exercise to better his own understanding of web based script writing... So it wont be a commercially available product of any type.
You can if you wish run a "No Script" version of this web page. Tools are available. Just look in add-ons for all web browsers. [edit].... to follow. "In test", I have just clicked the reader view [looks like an open book?.. at the end of the address window?.. ] in firefox that loads a plain text version of this page. This is useful as a "No Frills" reader of a slow loading page if all you want is the text, but it also, in test conditions, when clicked the second time, loads the page with no popup.
The reason I am so "Against" this popup, its scrip disables the ability to dismiss it, you HAVE to respond, or it disables the page. The Adverts I am seeing on this site with adblock plus disabled are NEVER useful to me. Think along the lines of Big Daves car dealership in downtown Chicago when I live in United Kingdom?.. They have no idea of where I am as I have geolocation disabled, because, it allows targeted adverts, so I dont allow that either. Therefore, the adverts are meaningless, they take time to load, they slow down the page, and are bloody annoying... Therefore, I have chosen an Add FREE environment which is better on my eyes.
To being DEMANDED to see adverts and having all page navigation removed in such a way is bully tactics. Its also ransom ware. Its forcing a "Pay wall" on this site.
My own personal geas is to defeat paywalls, as the internet is "Free", and so is my participation of that. I halped create the internet, this is against what we all set out to do, so I am against being FORCED to see useless adverts. I have no wish to create a dispute with proboards, but will never surrender to this demand.
If it means I get thrown off the site, it has been my pleasure to know you all.

I still haven't seen this pop-up. Or any pop-up for that matter. At least with adblock engaged. Why would it only be hitting your system and not everyone else running Firefox with Adblock?

I have had other sites give me some grief about running it, but never anything here. EDIT: I spoke too soon. I just saw the pop-up. It's a banner that appears at the bottom of the page. If you don't click on it, it doesn't really prevent you from using the board. In fact, it may have been coming up for some time and I just never noticed it before.

It tries to "Lock" the page if you click on it. On investigation, if it DID lock the whole page and prevent you from navigating anywhere, that is the crossing the line to "True" ransom-ware, and like the Stig, "Illegal in 17 states", and even parts of Portland.
Yes I agree, more pesterware than ransomware, but still, I am getting annoyed by it, because its one short step away from ransom.
Question, is this a matter of getting payment from the board for use of the site. Advert Free. I know we dont pay, or even pay much, to lease the site, but if that comes with an option to pay rent for the space, I dont see why we cant try that?. I am sure if Cyber asked for a contribution for board funds over PM, we could all come to some agreement. I for one am prepared to stand my corner on this if thats the case?.

At the bottom of the page is a link to "Click here to remove banner ads from this forum".
Looks like it will cost a minimum of $8 per month to do so (for 50,000 page views).

Anyone can turn off the ads at any time. They just need to hit the link below and pay.
I'll be honest; I don't see this popup yet, so I don't see the need to pay.
Even if I did see it, I might just turn off my AdBlock, because I realize that, no matter how much we talk about how the internet should be free, someone has to pay for servers and software. Proboards have to feed themselves, too, and I'm grateful enough that they've given us the free ice cream to not be too rude and insist it be my favorite flavor.
That's how I've treated the anti-AdBlock sites elsewhere. The ones I don't really care about, I simply don't visit.
I could invite everyone to use the latest Google Chrome with Adblock as it seems to work for me, for free. Maybe it's the option settings? I do have the "allow unintrusive advertising" turned on, so maybe that's the issue? It works for me.
On my cell, I don't have AdBlock at all. I have to confess I don't miss it when I check in here.
