A few weeks back I installed iTunes on my laptop. Since then, I've used it to download several albums, a handful of singles, and a 15-minute documentary.
I've come to the realization that I *should* have installed it to one of my USB keys, as it would permit me to keep iTunes handy even if something happens to said laptop.
Other than just burning everything to CD or DVD, is there a way for me to transfer the actual download files to said USB key?
Thanks.

You should be able to open My Music, and navigate from there to your iTunes library. You can click on the folder to open it and copy/drag to your USB drive. Just to be sure, what version of Windows are you running?

Reading your post, it could be taken two ways.... Are you asking if you can move the Music files, or, as per this part... Were you suggesting moving the program files?.... If you are trying to move the program files, and install it as a Portable App, the U3 sort of Mobile software that runs on a USB drive, its tricky...... This guy tried it, I cant vouch for it though?... forums.ilounge.com/third-party-software-mac-pc/174182-how-itunes-usb-drive-pc-only.html{all suggested web pages are verified as "safe" by Norton safe web) However, as for actuall Portable Apps, there is no Itunes version for U3, its a Closed source program, so cant be converted, closely guarded and licensed by Apple. However... There is an alternative.... If you Google Songbird... This portable app gets mentioned everywhere as a good app that can find locate move and spot duplicates on the same drive kind of thing.... Its also built around Firefox, so probably very good as well. download.cnet.com/Songbird-Portable/3000-2141_4-75300316.htmlAlso, you can download Itunes as many times as you want onto separate devices. I believe once you download ANY file, if you try to download it again, Itunes host should recognise you as a user and no charge you multiple times for the same file?... (I know Kindle does this and states "Already Downloaded" somewhere...)

Itunes as a software is free and freely installable on any windows/mac system.
The actual songs/video's should be in a folder and afaik freely copyable and playable with other software.

I HATE iTunes. The only reason I have it on my PC at all is to transfer my music to my iPhone. It's just about one of the hardest programs I've ever tried to use. Simple tasks are unbelievably difficult. In fact, thanks to iTunes, my next smart phone will NOT be an iPhone.

Greg.... But what will you do with all the devices you have with an i-phone dock?...
I used to joke about "What next, are they going to build a toaster with an i-phone dock"... That was until Dave, a friend, showed me on his smart phone a Toaster with an actual i-phone dock.....
Give yer head a wobble?....
Recently, a certain CSL furniture place (Not the best place) started a TV advert with a bloody SOFA with an Iphone dock......
I DONT OWN AN I-PHONE..... nor do I actually want one either.... Now can you advertising idiots STOP advertising things with i-phone docks in them to me please?............
AND FFS STOP with the thing that when you buy a computer its ready installed with I-Tunes?...

That's the reason i despise apple, their constant non-standard connections.
It's always a pain that things that work on any other device have to be different for macs, and vice versa.
Especially bad now that the iThingies gotten quite fashionable, and they start building that in into really big stuff, like cars....

But what version of iPhone does it act as a dock for? And when he upgrades his iPhone, will he need to upgrade his toaster?

Craig, I have no idea, or indeed that there was any difference. nor do I actually care, I was just upset/annoyed/amazed/(confused??) that someone had gone and done it anyway.

Speaking of iPod docks. What's frustrating is that no one makes a simple MP-3 player that has built-in speakers. Something like a clock radio that you can just plug a USB thumb drive or FLASH memory card into and play MP-3's. It seems that the only way to play MP-3's through speakers is either on a computer or buy a speaker that has an i-whatever dock or AUX input that you plug into the headphone jack on a portable MP-3 player. You still have to buy two units. The speaker device and a MP-3 player.
I know that some car radios can now play MP-3's directly from a memory stick and I believe some A/V receivers also can. But if there's a stand alone unit that can do it, I haven't been able to find it. And I have looked.

Wow. Thanks. That's just what I was looking for. I tried searching but guess I just didn't put in the right search terms. I searched all the on-line stores but nothing. Again, I guess I wasn't searching right. When I asked them at Best Buy, they said no one made such a device but most of them there didn't even seem to know which was was up.

Without the key from iTunes, you can't use them. All you need to do is to use your iTunes account on a different machine and you get all your bought stuff from their "cloud" along with the key.

Well, another problem has arisen.
I have $9.49 credit in my account.
I want to buy an album that is priced at $8.99.
I should be able to make the purchase and have $0.50 left in my account, right?
Nope - iTunes is saying "insufficient funds".

Did you message them to find out what's going on?

Yeah, but the auto-response said that it could take as long as 48 hours for them to actually get back to me.
This irritates the snot out of me, as:
1. Some of the albums I've been trying to track down are so rare, if not out of print, that iTunes was pretty much my last option.
2. I saw several CDs that I was planning to purchase down the road as gifts for people who, like me, are also into older albums.
3. I can potentially get a free $25 gift card each quarter via one of the paid survey sites I'm with, meaning "free music".
If I can't figure out what the problem is, then I'm back to taking my chances with E-Bay and Half.com.

You know that you can also buy music from Amazon? I use them a LOT for buying music. I never use iTunes for anything except trying to download my music to my iPhone. And it doesn't really do that very well.
Did I mention that I HATE iTunes?

Again - it comes down to "I can get free gift cards, meaning that I can get free albums".
Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered with them, either.
