Is anyone planning to watch this?
I may turn it on for a while with the sound turned down, to see if we get some nice canyon footage. I don't know if I'll stick around for the whole thing due to the timing. I have to get up for work at 5:30 Monday morning, and Discovery has blocked over two hours for the show. We all know the actual walk will be going as late in the timeslot as possible. I would be amazed if Nik starts earlier than 9 Central, and that's my normal bedtime on work nights.

The commercial says "No net, no tether". I would add,"no brains". It's a stupid stunt. No I won't be watching it.

I may watch the actual walk. I won't watch the inevitable 60-90 minutes of fluff and filler while they monitor the wind socks and ratchet up the drama with the talk of possibly scrubbing the stunt due to high winds or weather approaching, only to have Nik go ahead and make the walk, despite what his safety experts advise, because that is what he does EVERY TIME.

As I understand it, Nik is one of the Flying Wallendas. Heck, that family has been wire walking for about a century.
Watching daredevils has never been my thing, personally. I'll check the web later for the result.

I watched the niagra crossing. the best bit was seeing him hit the Canadia side and "realize he forgot his passport" not going to make an effort to watch this.

Didn't watch the dunce who jumped from the balloon wearing a space suit - not going to watch this. People risking their lives for 15 minutes of fame is not something I'm going to support.

I confess to being pulled in by magazine articles regarding the high altitude skydive. It tweaked my interest because I read a serious and fascinating proposal on how to literally skydive from low Earth orbit, and this was as close to that as it gets.

I will be interested at some future point if this guy makes it across the wire.
The sky dive.... This has already influenced the construction of space suits. (Future upgrades?..) Now it has been proven that man can "land" from low earth Orbit, they will investigate if it indeed be possible from Orbit... even Space station.....(ISS)
Of course, they will not be attempting the speed of sound again?... But ..
It used to be a joke about being as useless as a parachute on a space suit? I think that may be about to change.

The idea of a sub-orbital skydive is not new, its been around for at least twenty years if not a heck of a lot longer. (Probably one of those Cold War ideas that make you wonder exactly what they used to put in the water of government buildings.)
The opening sequence for Star Trek Generations was meant to be Kirk performing an orbital skydive, and they got as far as filming the landing until someone realised that the special effects of the time were either not up to the task or would have cost too much. The sequence does, however, appear in the novel.

SkyWIRE, I hear on the radio that he did the walk in 20 mins... running the last part?... I think I may have run more than just the last part... I would have run "Away"... even Further.....
Sub-Orbital, yes Cyber, but how about FULL orbital?....
There has been an idea, again star-wars or other Sci-Fi originated, and I think I may know the origin if Azimov was one of the first to suggest that, that they could use Escape pods... This was an idea "Floated" for the ISS... but how to land them..... Now they are thinking a jet-pack and space suit, jet towards the atmosphere, and parachute down... I still dont understand re-entry speeds. I am told if you dont hit hard enough you bounce off?... I cant see why there cant be a slower approach.
If its an emergency, does it matter where in the world you land either?... Alive or dead in outer space?... hand me the noodles my fine Chinese friend, and thanks for finding me.....
Space suit?.. it would float wouldnt it?... water landing is just fine, they know I am coming, send a ship, and I dont care who's flag is flying....

(I was wrong, the space shuttle would be travelling around 18,000 miles per hour in orbit. that's a lot of slowing down.

It was just over 20 minutes.
I'm surprised -- I honestly expected them to hold off on the walk until 9 Central. I had the pre-walk on for the very nice pictures of the Grand Canyon, came out of the kitchen with a bowl of ice cream, and realized he was already on the wire.
Part of the problem with re-entry is getting the angle right. Had Apollo 13 re-entered the atmosphere at too shallow an angle, it would have skipped back into space; too steep an angle, and they would have burned up. And if I recall correctly, they were right on the edge of the "safe" angle.

I watched the walk on Science Channel today. It took him 22:40, I believe was the official time.
He did sort of run about the last 15 feet or so to the finish line and only after he was well over solid ground.

I noticed that on the Niagra walk - it seems to be a common tightrope finish - sort of a "Oh god, my feet hurt, get me off this wire" thing.

I think that running is just "Showing off"...... Can YOU run on a tight rope?.. I cant even walk on one, wind your neck in, we all know you did it......
I also note Discovery channel (UK) had a one hour special on it last night.....
I was kinda wondering, what would they have done with the hour if he had cancelled... or what if it had gone wrong?.....

I could probably run three or four steps on something of that width, if I had a good platform to land on at the end, and a massive counterbalance to keep me stable. the odds would be greater in that distance that I would miss a step than that I would tip far enough to not make it to the end.
