Not being able to burn wood would triple my electric costs in winter, not to mention that I couldn't use sauna.(which is the reason i doubt they'd ever ban wood burners here, people'd be rioting)

Mad cow was a cover-up, it was also linked to some "Safe" medicinal thing going on, where if you overlayed a map of where the trials were happening, it was almost the same map for the outbreak of Mad Cow...
Of course it was hushed up and resigned to the "Conspirational" bin if anyone mentioned it, but the drug was removed from history rather quick.

I feel your pain. We "officially" got 5.1" overnight, but I "unofficially" measured 6.2" in the driveway. Well, at least it's going to be cold. -6º tonight. That's -21ºC for all you non U.S. folks.

We got three inches of powdery snow yesterday. Unfortunately it's been so long since we got snow that everyone was defaulting to "first snow of season, drive like idiot" mode. The police had to stop responding to non-injury car accidents by early afternoon. But we're still way behind where we should be, so feel free to chase any snowstorms my way .

I was listening to the radio on the way to work this morning and heard that one town in CT will now fine homeowners who blow snow off their property into the street. One radio caller quipped: Can homeowners fine the snowplow drivers that push snow from the street into their driveway?

Have I mentioned the snowstorm that's on the way for late Sunday or early Monday? (Three in one week...)

Couldn't find any reference to it in the normal Conspiracy sites. Mostly, they seem to be convinced that "Big Beef" is causing it to promote their profits (of course). Looking forward to rain this weekend, hopefully.

I was listening to the radio on the way to work this morning and heard that one town in CT will now fine homeowners who blow snow off their property into the street. One radio caller quipped: Can homeowners fine the snowplow drivers that push snow from the street into their driveway? It is fairly common for people in my area to be too lazy with their 4 wheeler plows to direct the show to where it should go. They just pull a U turn in the middle of the street trailing snow the whole time and end up dump snow all over the road. It is not in their driveway so they don't care where it is. So it then creates a hazard for people driving on the what are supposed to be the snow safe route. While the plows blocking your driveway is a valid concern, I have no sympathy for the person who creates another problem and potential hazard for someone else to clean up. If you have a snowblower, you can deal with what the plows put in front of your driveway without putting it in the street.

so in the same day, I hat to take my jacket off because I was too hot, and I had to wear gloves because it was too cold. that is an absolutely monstrous temperature shift for us. (low of 27, high around 50)

Reminds me of Devil's Slide in Pacifica, just south of San Francisco.
Every few years, during the winter storms, it would live up to its name and slide into the sea--usually taking part of Highway 1 with it, cutting off several coastal towns.
Just last year they finished rerouting the highway through a tunnel, making it a lot easier to survive the winter. They turned the old highway into a pedestrian/bike trail. This completes several decades of planning and execution--I remember them talking about a tunnel when I was a kid back in the dark ages.
Hope you and yours haven't been hit too badly in that mess.
Right now, it's 2:20 in the morning (ain't insomnia grand!), but the soothing sound of rain is on the roof. Weatherman says it's going to be a good storm today, and I've never seen so many people happy about it.

The drought in CA in one picture: Gotta love El Nino - NOT! Glad to hear it's raining there Loki & hopefully you'll all get that rain you need. I hope that the heavens continue to stay open & pour down on you so much that you need to call Noah for a lift to work.

The white death is now here for real - predicted to continue through the day.in the last 20 minutes we have gone from 0 to about 25% coverage on the rough terrain, and the flakes are starting to clump.

and again we see microclimates in action. when I left the north end of the district, it was 27 degrees, with a couple inches of snow on the ground, already. here in the tropical south end, it is a balmy 32 and raining.

27 to 32? Sometimes I see that big a ∆T in the time it takes to go from my front yard to the back. A few weeks ago, it went from 33º to 4º in three hours.

A few weeks ago, it went from 33º to 4º in three hours. but this isn't time related - it is geographic. in the northernmost station, they were putting the tire chains on the trucks, and where I am, it is just wet.
