well, the above pictures are now outdated to the conversation - though they do give a good view of the current weather. here.
meanwhile, in the People's Republic of Portland, all the news commentators are standing in the snow talking about how terrible the weather is. - and to be honest, it is way outside most Oregonians' abilities. right now, they are talking about freezing rain on top of packed snow.
for those unfamiliar with freezing rain, think of it as God's own Zamboni.

Three hours from the front to the back yard?... I think your lawn mower needs tuning up?... either that, or thats some size of house you got........
Perhaps they are trying to stop them escaping......
Edit, Weather here, Somerset level went up by 3ft overnight fri/sat, and more rain forecast.
I am on flood-watch for all routes. Train lines in Somerset now cut, so entire south west now isolated, MUCH freight needs moving, and roads are flooded.... I would suspect a rise in sea transport, but the Channel is also pretty rough.....
I have been offered almost permanent work if I move south until that freight line is fixed?... But I am getting enough work here, so may have to decline that offer.

our weather has returned to essentially normal. yes, there is still residual snow - it takes time for the rain to wash it away.

Another lovely snow event happening in Connecticut right now. Forecast said dusting...it's about 1/2" after an hour....
Oh yeah, I have found a way to get cars to slow down on my street. Stand at the end of your driveway swinging a pick ax*.
(*I was reducing the size of a snow pile - about 24" high with an ice crust for the top 1-2". I chose to do this after my wife detailed one door of the car...)

-13ºF tonight. When this happened a month ago, schools were closed, business shut down and the news told everyone to stay inside. After a month of these temperatures, now it's "Oh well. Another day closer to spring."

The Thames is set to flood... water rising quickly..... London on flood alert?... about bloody time. Perhaps is there is a danger of them getting their feet wet in the houses of Parliament, they may see clear to getting some AID where it is needed?....
No I dont want to sound all selfish now, but charity begins at home, and instead of sending money to be mis-associated from building schools in Pakistan that never get built but the local politician drives a rolls royce, perhaps flood victims in OUR country could use that million quid a lot easier?....
Sod paying europe to change our laws, start paying to pump peoples homes out HERE in the UK.

Well, unvalued taxpayer, I do not see any flooding at the moment, so the area must be well guarded from flooding.
*Cue flooding*
It seems there is a flood there. We'll have to spend $15M & three years studying flood cycles before we can take any actual action.

We'll have a rather garish press conference to announce our humanitarian efforts to study if the current flood is a sign of flooding in these areas. *Camera flashes abound* Please get my good side as I know this will be on the front page just in time for my announcement to run for reelection. ...and so goes the cycle of futility & inactivity.

Perhaps is there is a danger of them getting their feet wet in the houses of Parliament... I wondered why they are now visiting the flooded SW. Why be flooded in London when you can visit like areas and get cheap PR into the bargain?

I cannot get rock salt (ice melt) anywhere in my area. Turns out, it was all sent south as soon as the first snowflake fell two weeks ago and there are no estimates as to when it will be available in the northeast again...

Any water softener in the stores? I know plow companies go with that when there is a shortage. You just have to find the right size granules. It's more expensive but beats a broken hip.

The local Lowes/Home Depots have been suggesting water softener as an alternative. No granules to be found, would it be just as effective (albeit labor intensive) to get the pellets and smash them into granules?

Having walked on water softener salt used on snow, I have to warn you that it's not that easy. The pellet kind is about marble sized, and can be as bad as walking on marbles.
