Temperature in my area at wake up was 5F (-15C). High for the week is expected to be 34F (1C). But, no snow in the forecast, just heavy winds.

Attachment DeletedI was out in the cold last night with the newspapers. Here in my part of Texas, the cold brings with it another nuisance: cedar. When it gets as cold as it is (the high was 16 F yesterday), the cedar berries pop open and start spreading all of their pollen. I spent so much time outside last night that I was literally coughing up chunks of cedar pollen this morning.

The weather is definitely winning out here. A plumbing pipe blew at the hospital where I work, forcing four units to be closed. A pipe blew at one of the three elementary schools in my town, meaning the students from that school will be divided and placed in the other two schools.

I really think there might be something to this climate change thing, at this moment it's actually colder in Florida than in Finland

Well, after my post this morning. I found that we had no water. Just as I discovered that, my dad called and asked if our water was off, as there's was. We share a well, so with both of us not having water, it was easy enough to figure that something had frozen at the well. First time ever happened, that our well froze. Well, it actually was the pressure switch that froze. We put two drop lights with 100 watt bulbs next to the switch and pipes, closed the well house back up and in about 45 minutes, we had water again. Another advantage of incandescent bulbs over CFLs. Yep. I wonder if we'll still be able to get incandescent "heat lamp" bulbs, with this ban on incandescent bulbs.

Actually, I remember reading about how someone was making and selling 100W bulbs as "heating units" (I believe it was somewhere in Europe). It was decided that it was legal as long as he didn't call them "light bulbs".

It was decided that it was legal as long as he didn't call them "light bulbs". A lot of folks still use "heat lamps" for lots of things. Such as with this cold weather, heating up small areas for outdoor pets and poultry and poultry. For example, the old dog house that the outdoor farm cats, sleep in here on the farm, has one of those Clamp Lights and a 75 watt bulb in it, to warm up the interior of the house. The cats love it.

our local barking head was spouting off, on his noontime blurb about how we always have a polar vortex in the winter, and since this one was colder than last year's, that proves that the average temperature of the planet is not going up.

These signs were on the door to the recruiting offices in South Bend, Indiana, when the temp was -12F with -37 wind chill.

On the other hand, I saw a global warming proponent on the news today that said the polar vortex was caused because it got so hot at the north pole, all the hot air raised up and pushed all the cold air out. Both sides seem to have their share of nut-jobs.

Sounds like Lex is the only one with anything even resembling normal weather right now. Normal around here would have been night temps below freezing and day temps a little above from around late October to early December, going into freezing both night and day, possibly with snow, until around late February/early March. As far as I can recall we've had less than 10 nights and not a single day with freezing temps since April last year. We've had a lot of rain and a few nasty storms. Haven't caught the rain quite as bad as the Brits though. Actually it's bellow average here too, I think we're getting the left overs of Snowagedon here. Average for an Australian summer is between 37C - 40C/ 100F - 104F this is more like early Spring/late Fall for us. The hottest it's going to get over the next 7 days here is 28C which is about 82F. I just packed my winter blankets away & I'm having to get them back out again. It's all grey & cloudy outside at the moment it's meant to be January but it feels more like July, this is so messed up!

Wind is bad, 70mph gusts, rain that drives right in to your underwear, whilst playing a drum solo on the roof. The rain that is... The last time I tried playing my own drums on the roof, the neighbours complained... I dunno why.
The wind has finally got the lid of my Wood waste bin just outside the back of the workshop.... It only had two bungee straps holding it shut, obviously not enough. Back garden has now been covered with a light dusting of sawdust. Broon snow?...

No you are not a dork Urban & nether you or Oziris that old - ie: Over The Hill. It is in fact Castle Greyskull well spotted. From what my friend said if the weather permits they're doing Skeletor's Castle next. I'll share any pic's as they come along.

we have a wind watch possible for the weekend. unfortunate as we have a "Burn to Learn" scheduled, and it may have to be postponed if the winds get too high. for some reason people tend to squawk when we burn down an entire neighborhood when we were only supposed to burn one building. meanwhile, we have our normal winter weather - which means it never really got lighter than twilight yesterday, and at best, you could see across the valley, and some definition to the fog on the other side.
