After much debate and going back and forth, I finally decided on this printer (Canon Image Class D570 Monochrome Laser Printer with Scanner and Copier - Black), and got 4 toner cartridges right away too (it was a deal for the 4). I don't think he'll ever need another printer or toner again... although, we might keep it at our house as the wife has gone back to school. Yeah, I just ordered a new printer also. I've had a number of various OKI Data printers for business use for a long time. They've really been fantastic printers but some of them are going on almost 20 years. Since OKI no longer sells printers in the U.S. market, parts and even supplies are getting harder to get. So after much investigation, I decided to bite the bullet and get a commercial quality printer. I am going with a Xerox C8000. It's a large format (11X17) color laser with multiple paper trays and 1200X2400 resolution. It's a popular printer in the graphics arts industry so the print quality must be pretty good. I'll soon know as it's supposed to be delivered this week. I'll let you know.

Lasers tend to last until the drivers are no longer compatible with the new computer.

Looks like a really nice one. I debated the pros and cons of getting a color laser, and decided that, for the amount and type of printing we do, it wasn't necessary to spend that extra money. My FIL still has 2 ink jet's, so he can use those if he want's to print color. Mine is supposed to be delivered Friday, although the toner is being delivered tomorrow.

The Xerox is way too expensive for just home use, but since I do a lot of printing of instruction, installation and troubleshooting manuals for my business, I can justify spending the extra $$$. The Xerox is rated for 20,000 pages per month and I only print 500 to 1000 per month so hopefully it will hold up as well as the OKI's did.

as I'm getting dressed, this morning, she says, "the TV wasn't working right last night" so I turn on the TV, and it comes on set to the proper input, which is the most common problem. then I notice the satellite receiver isn't powered up. the UPS I run it from, to prevent it having to reprogram itself in power blips has its power button on top, and apparently, one of the cats stepped on it last night.

I can't remember where it was I was chatting about this with WV, but it fits in this thread as well as it's computer related... I'm pretty happy right now. I had created a report in PowerBI, but was unable to get the scheduled refresh to work (it was grayed out and, despite watching every video I could find on the subject I couldn't get it to activate), until yesterday. I had to install an additional app (it was in BI and appears to be part of it, but installs separately) that allowed my server credentials to reside in BI. This activated the schedule refresh button, and today was the big test to see if it worked, which it did! This means my team and I no longer have to even look at that data on a daily basis, saving us time and energy!
On another note, the printer works great! I haven't been able to figure out how to print to it from my phone yet, but that's me, and not the printer. I had forgotten how good a laser print quality is compared to an inkjet. I'm glad I asked for y'alls opinions, and then listened to them when you provided them... I'm very happy with the purchase.

and it seems my DVR UPS isn't up to the task. which means I have to determine whether it is because the battery is defunct, or because everything ended up plugged into the backup side. bottom line is, it runs the battery down and dies when it's on generator power. - which is odd, in and of itself, since it should be getting full current.

And speaking of printers, the Xerox C8000 that I ordered from B&H Photo showed up Monday. It's a lot larger than it looks in the picture, being about the size of a wash machine and weighting about the same (180 Pounds). Definitely not a desktop printer. With the help of my son and Son-in-Law, we managed to get it down the stairs into my basement office and up and running. Installation was relatively painless on my Windows 7 desktop computer. I tried a number of my more challenging print jobs on it including labels. plastic binder covers and 11X17 glossy double sided. It handled everything I threw at it flawlessly. And the print quality is absolutely amazing. It prints color photos with magazine cover quality which for a toner based laser printer is pretty much unheard of. We'll see how it does on going through toner cartridges although they are rated at 21,000 pages so it may be a while before I know. Overall I couldn't be happier with this printer.

Has the cat found the new printer yet and made it their new favorite napping spot?

Has the cat found the new printer yet and made it their new favorite napping spot? Never had a cat. We’ve always been a dog family until about two years ago when psycho husky died. After 11 years with psycho husky, I don’t think I will ever have a dog again either.

I've mentioned before that Duet, a program that allows you to use multiple screens on your computer or use your device as a second screen, showed up on the shared family computer one day, most likely the result of my dad installing it and not telling me. answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-did-duet-just-show-up-on-my-computer-in/243be6e2-4b12-4c2a-802c-ef35d91d6638I'm thinking of just uninstalling it. I tried to follow the advice above, and when I pulled up the listing for Windows C: (I'm on Windows 11) I found a Duet,Inc folder along with the other folders (like Windows, App Data, Kairos, and so forth). Starting to worry now that it's something I shouldn't touch. Would it be safe to just delete it anyway? If so, would it just be a matter of deleting that folder? Thanks.

I don’t know about windows 11, but with 10, you don’t need a special program to use multiple monitors. It’s part of the driver software that you use with your particular video display card. I have a W-10 system with three monitors on it and it doesn’t require any special software.

Multi-monior support has been built into windows since at least windows 98. I have been regularly running dual monitors since 2002 on my personal computer. My work computer is a 3 screen setup. Just go into your display setting and enable multi-monitors. Windows 10 and 11 also support wireless monitors. You can connect your PC to a smart TV or device like a Roku and use that for a monitor as well through your local network.
You don't need any special programs to run dual monitors, just up to date video drivers. I would get rid of that Duet program, all it does it provide an alternate way to access existing windows functions. Go ahead and uninstall it. If you are worried, uninstall it and then run something like CCleaner to make sure you get rid of any lingering registry junk.

If I get the chance, I'm going to ask dad if he installed it for any reason. Basically, I'm a bit high-strung IRL because the things I've been through have led to anxiety issues. I'm not the one who installed the program, so either he installed it or it came with some software update package. If the former he might have had a reason, but I can't quite figure out what we've been updating beyond Windows itself that might have had it.

Got my dad to hold still long enough for me to ask him. He didn't remember installing it. I let him and mom know I was uninstalling it. Hopefully, I have nothing more to deal with.

New one.
Dad is still running the old desktop that was using Windows 8 even though 8 is no longer being serviced and I'm pretty sure he's not running any antiviral scans.
Just now, he came in to me asking about something or other. He said that the system was either doing some sort of update or some sort of systems check asking him to ensure that it was him and that the system still had authorization to handle his sensitive information. This would involve an e-mail with a security code being sent to my Hotmail account.
Is this something legit for 8? This is the first I remember hearing about it, but he accused me of being in "panic mode" when I broke off and tried to contact one of my brothers as my brother is more aware of these things than I am.

Was it an email, pop-up message, was he on the Internet at the time? Certainly sounds like a scam to me. In any event, I don’t know if Microsoft still allows update from eight, but if they do, you would be best to get rid of that pigroast.

Recovery emails are common, and often someone else's email than the one needing the help. That said, you would have set it up previously, and would be aware if your email was a recovery email. Parts of this sound legit, other parts not so much. If you didn't set your email as a recovery email for your dad, then it's all a scam! If you did, it might be okay.

All I know is, the way he was describing the whole thing it sounded fishy, so I said to hold off and that we'd need to ask one of my older brothers, as both of them know a lot more about modern tech than I do.
He flew off at me over that, saying I was in "panic mode" and needed to settle down.
So yeah, my heart was going even *before* I got logged out of Facebook thanks to this latest system crash.
