I looked more at the boss gave him a car that was only 4 years old - since any car the boss chose to give him would have been the boss' own, first.

while that was nice of the kids, I guess I'm just too old to think of a '93 as vintage.

This is a short, but cool story. I love the respect the team got as well (as recounted at the end of the story)

This is a short, but cool story. I love the respect the team got as well (as recounted at the end of the story) at last friday's home high school game, the announcer recited the "we need to be sportsmanlike, our opponents are not our enemies" speech multiple times during the game. made me wonder if there had been incidents, or if he was just being a bit of a twit.

Alterna Comics needed $8,000 to pay for an expansion to their distribution system.
So, they did a Halloween-themed fund-raiser.
$5 could get you a goodie bag for yourself, or $30 could get you 50 random "all ages" to "teen" comics you could give out at Halloween.
When they went past $8,000, they added some stretch goals.
Three of the four goals involve donating comics to charity.
At $10,000, everyone who purchased something will get a pin with special logo.
At $12,000, they'll donate 500 comic books to assorted libraries all over New England... and everyone who purchased something will get a tote bag.
At $18,000, they'll donate *another* 500 comic books to St. Jude... and everyone who purchased something will get a bumper sticker.
At $25,000, they'll donate *a third* set of 500 comic books to a charity that collects reading material for US military service members... and everyone who purchased something will get a signed art print.
They're at $9,701 as I type this, so the commemorative pin will likely happen overnight. But if they can get another $2k on top of that, we'll have a host of kids getting access to free comics.

I'm impressed. Alterna has gone back to some classic industry practices of bygone eras. Like the use of newsprint for the inside pages. And allowing third parties to buy ads. And actual, honest-to-God professionalism and class. The first two mean that the cover price of the average book is $1.50 to $20 as compared to the $5 most other publishers want now. The third one means that so many people are buying from them that they can leverage economies of scale when printing. It's pretty much nothing for them to get thousands of books printed at once despite how small they are.

the morning feelgood story was about a man in the flood zone in the carolinas who told his neighbors "come stay at my place until you can get back into your home" the key detail being his place is a 70 room hotel. at the time of the story he had given away over $50,000.00 value in free lodging, including three meals a day to flood victims. the flood victims, in return, are helping him keep things running.

Each Sunday, the coupon websites I go to refresh with new coupons.
This week's haul includes bacon, chocolate milk, and disposable razors.
I'm beginning to wonder if there's a sign here...

IRL I'm overweight and have thick facial hair. if it's a sign that they know you consume a lot of bacon, chocolate milk, and razors, and you didn't already know they track your purchases, you haven't been paying attention.

$tarbucks decided to try opening a deaf-friendly starbucks store in an area near a school for the deaf and with a large hearing impaired community. it is doing well. now deaf people have an easier way to pay too much for bad coffee.
