on the subject of superhero movies and darkness, I saw the latest version of fantastic 4, and it was, indeed, a very dark movie. I guess in a dark theater, you could see it, but I sure had trouble seeing any detail. it was also a significant revision of the backstory. another case of it being a decent movie, but still out in left field. Supposedly, it was based on an alternate origin story used in a somewhat obscure-by-comparison alternate Marvel universe in which everyone had a dark & edgy origin story. Not really, the ultimate universe wasn't darker than the main universe initially just an updated reboot. The series proved so good and popular it ended up outselling most of the existing title's, with many actually wanting the ultimate universe to become the main comics. Naturally marvel decided to...jump the shark, kill off half the characters in meaningless storylines and basically wreck what was a number of interesting and enjoyable comics. The Ultimates 1&2, Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men were very good and worth checking out in the early issues. Ultimate Fantastic Four was also good for its initial run, having younger and much more interesting characters than the main stream versions. (And funnier, such as Reed Richards getting Johnny to drink water he distilled from his own urine) For one thing Sue Storm is actually a strong female character, who if Reed hit her (as the main stream version has) wouldn't run off crying but kick the excrement out of him in short order. This was the version they decided to go with for the film, but studio interference utterly messed up what should have been a good film.

Unquote?...
sorry, having trouble getting this all in this morning, I am now on raspberry due to my main computer needing updates to something for photo- editing.
On to the point of the post. DARK movies.
What is it that all movies nowadays are so dark that there is no light at all.
When I watch them at home, either I am forced to watch them in a darkened room, or I miss half of the action...?.. I want to be able to see the side-table with my coffee mug on it. Hell if I put even a candle on in the room, its throws shadows so I cant see any detail.
I now have a setting on my television for "Movie-Extra" that has the contrast brightness and "gamma" banged up to the max because of this. The normal movie setting was not set bright enough so I put one of my own in.
Thankfully I also now have a TV and dvd player that has a combination with a smart setup that I can put a maximum on the volume to a certain level of decibels, so when the "quiet bit" ends and they start exploding the set, I dont get deafened?...
I do not live in a movie theatre, so, if you want to sell me the DVD, can you make a "Home cut" that reflects that modern man doesnt live in a darkened bat-cave with deaf neighbours?...

I guess that it might be some sort of stylistic decision. I honestly don't know.

I wonder if it is related to what I call "pro gear" syndrome. it is pretty easy for an amateur recording tech to create a mix that sounds amazing on studio equipment - but overdrives ordinary stereos. similarly, they can edit film to look incredible in the screening room, but doesn't show on the average TV.

It's possible. tfwiki.net/wiki/The_Transformers:_The_Movie#FormattingWhen the original 1986 Transformers movie was produced, the animators drew each frame to fit the aspect ratio for television, meaning that they used the full-screen (4:3) ratio. Since all of the cuts that went out were to this format, the individual projectionists had to matte it down to 16:9 for theatrical presentation, meaning that portions of each frame were lost. This makes a case where movie-goers suffered for the sake of the television audience. As an aside, though, Sony BMG and Metrodome both released "widescreen" cuts of the film about a decade ago. Cue furious fans making the realization that this meant losing footage instead of gaining it.

Of ALL of them, it will be a wet bank holiday before I take notice. The new ghostbusters will wait until its not an issue, because I disagree with the way it was made. The others will be something on TV because its bank holiday and the TV channel is doing the skeleton staff thing so nothing else to put on.

Kubo comes from my local animation studio, and all of its previous offerings have been odd but entertaining. Mrs TLW wants to see the new Ben Hur, and as far as ghostbusters - I do like a cheesy movie on occasion. on the other side of the coin, Mrs TLW bought the revenant, and she will be watching it Friday night while I'm on duty.
