It's one thing to criticize Youtube for free speech, it quite another for how much money you can make. and another, yet, to criticize them for allowing content you don't like, and also criticize them for disallowing content that you like.

My own opinion is that these sites should not be allowed to limit content. At most, maybe put age restrictions on material that is not suitable for kids or maybe even a warning that the material may be offensive to some and a brief description of what that material is. It should then be up to the individual viewer if they want to see it or not. And just because I may not agree with whatever the subject of the material is doesn't mean it should be banned. If I don't like it, I don't have to watch or read it. As for making money from Youtube, that's another matter. Youtube should be allowed to do whatever they want in that respect. If you don't want Youtube to run ads before your videos, they won't, but you don't make any money. If you do want to monetize your videos, then you have to play by their rules.

If I don't like it, I don't have to watch or read it. considering that their business model is to allow unsolicited content to be posted to their site, it makes the idea of being selective about the content a bit problematic. it also apparently confuses people as to the fact that they are still a business, and as long as they don't break the law, they are entitled to make such business decisions as they choose, as long as they are willing to accept the business related consequences of those decisions. they could choose to stop monetizing new videos entirely, if they wanted to.

Google isn't stupid. In fact, they pretty much invented targeted advertising on the internet. When you see an advertisement on Youtube, it's going to reflect the profile Google has on YOU, not what the subject matter of the video you are watching is. But I have no doubt, what videos you watch on Youtube become part of the advertising profile Google has on you. Google's advertising isn't random. It's very targeted to each individual. On a side note, I never, ever see Youtube advertising on my desktop PC. I don't know if this has anything to do with running Adblock or for some other reason, but if I call up the same videos on my phone, I see the ad's. Run up google and watch the addblock numbers rise... I use Ghostery and Ublock Origin on my XP machine, I have others on my Linux, my Laptop has Adbloch Ublock and ghostery, and I dont get that many adverts, more, I have "A Problem" with HTML5 video's on my laptop in that it keeps saying I have no HTML Video player ability, despite me having Forefox and all the add-ons expected and knowing I have a HTML player in there somewhere. I am wondering if the cookie to test if I have HTML is being blocked at some point. "At this point" on this page, I have Adblock reporting 6 blocks, Ublock reporting 5 and ghostery reporting 3, all different, so 14 in all?. and some of them are google. Even though this page is not google related. On you-tube, I just ran up a quick example, on another screen, I have Ublock reporting 36 and rising, just on its own?. .......................break whilst I let it settle.................... Recheck, between all three, its settled in the other window around 60 and rising slowly.... what are all those blocks for?. how may cookies are being rejected?. what kind of info is being blocked?. How much does google NOT know about me and my browsing habits?. Well, that information is priceless, because the less they know, the less I get bombarded with spam of all kinds?

Somewhat NSFW due to content:
YouTube host NeoUnrealist has done some digging into the YouTube shooter, including material from her own website and social media posts.
From what he can tell, she took the Adpocalypse personally. The fact that her workout video got age-gated while far more explicit videos from actual celebrities weren't got twisted in her mind to be some sort of attempt at censorship, something reinforced by a massive drop-off in earnings. Put it all together with her already somewhat militant views on animal rights, and somehow she got it in her head that YouTube was trying to suppress her for being a "threat" somehow and so she decided it was time to punish them.

I found one of her workout videos reposted, and I didn't see any reason to age-gate it. I didn't see much of any reason it would go viral, either. I'm kind of left with the opinion that this was another person who felt they should be internet famous and get rich off of youtube, and blamed youtube for it not going like she planned.

Put that together with the word "Adpocalypse" that they invented over this, and what you get is a bunch of millennial minded "The world owes us" who think easy money should flow easily, and indeed if money did grow on trees, would be asking why they had to pick it themselves?.

I recall, one of my carpenter friend's relatives happened to have a video qualify for monetization, back when that was a rare thing, and the reaction was "wow, the video was so popular, there got some mailbox money from it." now, the combination of everybody expecting whatever they upload will become a cash cow, and everybody using adblocker means somebody's going to be disappointed.

I think I mentioned before that I'm part of the YouTuber's Union movement, which is a group of creators seeking reforms from YouTube. While one of the reforms *is* "roll back the increased restrictions", we're looking at it from the perspective of "if people are taking their time to make the videos which YouTube makes money from, then fair is fair and the creators should get their cut as well." The other reforms we're after include more even-handed application of the rules (the algorithms in use are a mess, and many of their human screeners are poorly-trained or biased, if not both), better communication so that we creators understand why YouTube's found issue with something we've done (a lot of folks are just getting videos demonetized, restricted, or even taken down with little reason provided), and a general commitment to overall better service. So while we're upset with YouTube, we're trying to work within the system to make the changes we want. But yeah. It used to be that if YouTube recognized you as being an actual human you'd get a cut of the ad revenue. Now the requirements are so tight that most small channels aren't making a dime. Unless you've got a gimmick or you have friends, you're not going to make a full-time job of it anymore, which is the very hope and dream YouTube was selling when they started this.

With all the governmental regulations that look like are heading down the pipe, thanks to Facebook, it's probably going to get a lot worse than better.

No, what youtube was selling when they started this was someplace you could upload videos to so your friends could watch them. www.engadget.com/2016/11/10/the-history-of-youtube/

What's next is a spike in acid attacks. Basically, people are buying things like drain cleaner or borax, thinning them out, and putting them in sprayers. This is why you have to get at the mentality that makes people want to hurt others if you truly want to put a dent in it.
