Here's how it could work.
The mods alone would handle the threads listing the reference links. Each time a new link goes up, the first post is edited accordingly and a new post is made announcing the addition.
All of the debates would be confined to a single, specific-purpose debate thread for all to see.

If we were to make such a thing, this part would be extremely important: As a forum that tries to uphold the MythBusters legacy of finding the truth whatever that may be and wherever it may lead, we have to be extremely careful that we don't let our own confirmation bias dictate what sites we deem "reliable". Almost any topic you can think of can be discussed from a factual and an emotional/opinionated standpoint and the line between the two is often heavily blurred - especially on the Internet. Just look at the climate change debate. We've had that one here several times and even though 98% of scientists who have studied this extensively agree that human beings are at least partly responsible for the rising temperatures on Earth, it's still being debated. Problem is that just because 98% of all experts agree on something, that doesn't mean they won't someday be proven wrong. After all, more than 99% of all scholars used to believe Earth was the center of the Universe, but the fringe 1% who didn't turned out to be right.
First thing we'd need to do is agree on a definition of what a "reliable reference source" is and as I see it, there's more than one answer to that, because it depends heavily on what kind of "facts" you're looking for.Perhaps we need both?. At the moment, we deal with the myth, and quote the source when found. Perhaps we need to have a division in place or perhaps we dont, but bring up the site, and discuss the post not the poster, until we have consensus on reliable or not, and then make the decision. We also need somewhere to put a list of sites like that Onion news site I got "had" by a few months back. NOW I know, thanks to this board, its a 'fake' site.

Not a bad idea, although as noted there is the question as to how reliable sources and sites are. BTW; you forgot NASA. I'll consider how to do this without overworking us mods, or ending up with a confusing mass of posts with links. Which would kind of defeat the intention. I'll check to see if I can set individual threads to only allow staff to post there, allowing copy pasting and simpler organisation. As I said though, this could end up being a lot of work for the mods so we'd have to discuss the specifics. Again go to my above post... Have a "In progress" thread for general discussion and posting of sites to be considered, and when we reach consensus of which sites are worthy of addition to either the good the bad or the ugly reference threads, as we do need a list of "Places to avoid" as well as the good stuff, then the mods can be asked to place the nomination in that thread. As I am here most days, if it is needed, I can put each nomination into words that can be used, as long as we agree with a set template of how the site should be referenced, if that helps?... Perhaps we need to have that discussion. How do we do this. and some proposals of how each "page" be done. Do we sub-categorise the database, into subjects, such as put all the Richard Feynman lecture links and other maths type links in a maths sub-section, and all Stephen Hawkins and Brian Cox lectures in Physics and astronomy , with all mechanical stuff in another, and all "Natural world" stuff in yet another... etc, bringing in new sections as they are needed?.. I suspect we need an immediate "Work in progress" thread to start off the discussion and have that continuing for all to contribute to to propose the sites we want to discuss and see how that goes. I also suggest that any Video be allowed "As is", we cant just only allow text sites, as the Feynman Lectures are so mush better watched than trying to read them in script form?.. As always, all of you feel free to dissect this post for discussion purposes, if you have improvements or better ideas, chuck 'em in...

Recently Updated Threads. I have a link in my bookmarks that is this... citadelofmyths.freeforums.net/threads/recentIt allows me to see All recently updated threads, not just the [Participated] tab, which only shows the ones I have posted in... It allows me to see **NEW** posts in **NEW** threads. And yet... I have no bloody idea on how the hell I got that link??... I cant remember where it was..... May I make the suggestion that in interest of bringing new posts and new threads to the attention of the board members in a quick and easy method, the "participated" nepotism tab be replaced by "New posts" that links to all new threads with new posts in such as the link I just posted above?...

There's already a link at the bottom of the homepage that says; "View Recent Threads". If you click on that link, it shows all threads that have changed, in chronological order since your last visit, whether you participated in them or not. If you are not signed in, you only see threads that can be viewed by the general public.

I favor it over the participated threads button, because it links to the thread title, and can be used to get to the most recent unread post in the thread. in the participated thread link, you see only the new posts, sorted only be age and not by thread.

it appears we've maxed out the pictures we can have hosted by the board. I'm wondering if there is a tool Cyber can use to purge hosted pictures that are over 2 years old.

it appears we've maxed out the pictures we can have hosted by the board. I'm wondering if there is a tool Cyber can use to purge hosted pictures that are over 2 years old. I just did a search. There are about 28 pictures I uploaded that are being hosted by the board. I wonder if I delete them, will they be removed from the server. Problem is that some of them show up in quotes by other people. If I delete the one that I uploaded, will it also delete the one's in the quoted post? Guess I could delete one and find out. If you want to find the posts where you uploaded a picture, do a search by your user name and the word "attachment" in the post. A list of all your posts with attachments will show up.

RL is kicking me in the butt right now, so its taken me a while to respond. In what I think is the correct order;
As far as I know at this point the 'participated' button is fixed and can't be moved by the admin. That at least was the case last time I checked. When I get the chance I'll go and look through the admin options and see if this has changed.
I just noticed the picture limits having been reached, which I suspect might also include linked videos...no idea why I think that. I'll have to take a look though the options to see what I can do about that, beyond paying money I don't have to increase the limit. Any options I'm aware of right now would be time intensive, so it could be a while before I could do anything about it short of deleting entire threads. As I said real life sucks.

I've edited a couple pages worth of my old posts to delete the pictures, but I don't know if it actually un-hosts them.

OK, I can delete pictures on the board that are eating up the limit. The catch is that there are FAR to many for me to go through to make any attempt to filter what would be deleted.
In English if I delete pictures its going to have to be everything.
So first, let me know if anyone has any problems with that. Second if there are any pictures from here you want to keep for whatever reason you might want to copy them should they get deleted from the board.

Question, can you, as suggested, just delete everything past a "sell by date" of maybe over 2 yrs old, or is that an awful lot of searching to find out date posted kind of thing?..
Otherwise, go ahead.... we could always re-upload anything important should needs be?.

It just lists the thread, not the date. There is also no mass delete option...so I'm going to have to manually click on every one to delete them.
