I cannot get rock salt (ice melt) anywhere in my area. Turns out, it was all sent south as soon as the first snowflake fell two weeks ago and there are no estimates as to when it will be available in the northeast again... Don't know what the temp is there, but salt isn't very effective below about 15ºF. It won't melt anything but just spreading it on the ice can help keeping from slipping. I've tried some of the rock salt substitutes but was not happy at all with the results. It's predicted to hit -15ºF here tonight then start to warm up toward the end of next week. Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I just use small gravel 2mm and builders-sand(fine) mixed on the driveway. Don't like salt, it destroys the car and leeches in the ground

Looks like our friends in the Southeast are in for a wintery blast. The National Weather Service is already calling it "A storm of epic proportions," Not exactly sure what that means, but it doesn't sound good.

Ground water is soooooo high at the moment, the salt mines of Cheshire are on alert.
Its the thing with salt, and the word "Mine".... It doesnt get mined half-way up a hill.
Question, if a salt mine floods, does that make an underground sea.....

It seems that every time snow has been on the map for Connecticut this winter, the forecasters have chosen to get all hyped up and put people on red alert. Oh my God! 6" of snow! Run to the store before you're stuck inside of half-an-hour while roads get plowed... And the MIL has fed into it, every time. She hates my cynical, "we'll see what happens" attitude about every storm. We've been through snow before & we'll be through it again. I used to follow a local weatherman named Matt Scott on Fakebook because he always gave the most levelheaded forecasts. His motto was 'prepare, don't scare'.

We are due for a storm tonight. Predictions for this have been all over the place. They started with 36"+, then dropped it to 1-3". As of this morning they were calling for 5-8". So at this point, I'll believe it when I have to shovel it. Biggest problem is that the whole region is in a salt shortage. I had 75 lbs of it in November. I am now to less than 20 and can't find it anywhere.

Current snow predictions for my area range from 1" to 12"...once again, there's a reason why it's a prediction, just like a fortune teller...

We've had all of 2 weeks of real winter....In one of the coldest places of Europe(normally). It's just been miserable and not enough to do real winter activities, or just skip winter all together.

I guess things have to balance out. We didn't just have the coldest, snowiest winter on record, but we do have to go back over 100 years to find one that beat it. But since I wasn't around then, this is it.

90 mph winds, 108 at the coast, and much storm damage... 450 gallons per second, thats the water flow under a bridge at one place on the Thames. The M6 motorway over the Thelwel Viaduct, the M60 over Barton, M62 up "Windy hill", the east coast main train line above Preston, all trains in Pembrokeshire coast, all of those were shut. Everywhere else, all heavy delays, and Crewe station shut when part of the roof blew off.....
More to come. More weather that is.
Its calmer this morning, but this is the lull between storms...

It's snowing in Connecticut and the usual three types of drivers on the road:
1) Those who are nervous/white-knuckled when driving in the snow and should just stay home. 2) Those who misjudge the road conditions & their driving abilities and should just stay home. 3) Those who actually know how to drive in the snow...the minority of drivers in my area.

we're only peaking in the 70s-80s; but it is the first windstorm of the season so the weather reporters are all atwitter with excitement. the first one is, however, always interesting, because we've had the summer growth, and the ground is wet - so we get to find out which trees didn't get their root growth in line with the tops. so far, Ive had nothing but debris come down in my area, but I've seen where a few trees got knocked over in other areas.

Well, the 5-8 that they called for is in reality 13" so far and this storm is supposed to last until around sundown. I would not be surprised if we get another 6".
