well, there goes HIS major league career. I guess being a good sport doesn't make you good in sports. not in televised sports, at least. depending on his actual sportsball skills, he might have a future in the olympics.

My local Wal-Mart was remodeled recently, and I'm still learning the new lay-out. Well, I was there trying to see if they had shirts in my size, and I blundered into a clearance section buried deep in the men's clothing department. Among the items on clearance was a single white dress shirt in my size ($9) and two leather belts in my size ($8 each).
I get home, check the mail, and find that I have a refund check. One of the places I went to this summer as part of a series of health check-ups overcharged me, and so I'm getting back part of what I paid.

Maybe pick up a Lotto ticket next time you’re out.

Maybe pick up a Lotto ticket next time you’re out. people always say that, but it's actually the worst time, since you've already used up your luck.

In Mexico and several other Spanish-speaking countries, the word "exito" (ecks - eet - oh) is used to describe hit songs, both the hot hits on the radio and a musician's greatest hits. Many countries have it that all TV and radio stations must start with one or more identifying letters to indicate place of origin. For example, the United States requires either K or W depending upon what side of the country you're on, while Canada requires C. In Mexico, it's XE. I got to thinking that it'd be a silly thing to have a station XETO that played hot hits. I began to figure out how I'd work it into something I was writing, and see if anyone got the joke. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XHETO-FMThere's a real XETO-AM in Mexico, now known as XHETO after being given permission to broadcast on FM as well. I see I'm not the only one who came up with that particular pun.

"I have yet another idea, and I think the setting should be a smaller town. I think I'll look up Stephenville, a college town a bit northwest of me. They're only 20,000 people plus the college population, so that's a third smaller than the town I live in." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephenville,_Texas *looks up Stephenville in Google Maps* "How does a town that's only 66% the size of the town I live in have a far greater level of economic activity? I'm seeing upscale hotels, department stores, and so forth."

About the only "economic activity" I saw was a McD's and a Walmart. No industry to speak of. And which upscale hotels are your referring to? The Super 8 or the Best Western. Because I sure didn't see much else.

(information drawn from city websites)

Where I live, a Hampton Inn is still not considered a luxury accommodation. But Ironhold may be viewing it from an “anywhere but here” viewpoint.

They have multiple hotels, a dozen or so bars, at least two shopping centers (aside from Wal-Mart Supercenter and H-E-B Grocery) that include a T.J. Maxx department store and a Cinemark multi-screen theater, a locally-owned restaurant that is nationally renowned (the Hard 8 grill), dozens of other name-brand chain retailers (including two Tractor Supply stores), at least a dozen national chain restaurants, a Ford dealership, a Jeep dealership, and a tractor dealership. They also have a regional airport and what looks like a railyard. My town has... very little of that by comparison. For example, we lost both of our new car dealerships in the 2008 recession and nobody else has wanted to put one up since. So even though Stephenville is smaller, the college being *right there* combined with the tourism bucks and the farming & ranching have apparently put the local economy into overdrive.

OK.
I'm looking at Munich, Germany on Google Maps as a bit of research.
I hit the zoom in button once.
I see McNope's, Hilton, and Holiday Inn. I laugh a little.
I see a shopping mall. I decide to zoom in a lot closer as Google Maps often lists the individual stores in various malls and centers.
I see Game Stop, Starbucks, Foot Locker, and another McNope's.
I notice the shopping center across the street from the mall.
It has a Five Guys.
What a world.
